Civitas Booth at Festival of Nations Aug. 26 - 27

The International Institute of St. Louis' annual Festival of Nations is a great time to get together and learn about different cultures within our community. The food is terrific and there's always good music on the scene.

If it's hot, we'll have special Civitas fans to keep us cool. What we need are a few more volunteers to help us out at the booth. If you are interested in volunteering for an hour or more, you can register by clicking here.
Civitas Kick-off Event -- Mock City Council

We like to think globally and act locally. So a mock city council meeting is an ideal way to start off the 2017-18 year for Civitas. Some of you were in attendance last January when Luke Babich, former candidate for the city council in University City, MO discussed the philosophical and petty issues that can consume local government. Luke is going to come in on Saturday, September 9, to be our "Mr. Mayor" and moderate the discussion as dozens of representatives and other citizens come together to tackle difficult and meaningful local issues in our newly-created town of "Civitas Heights."

Each participant will be given a role to play and issues to address when they arrive. It will be a time for listening, caucusing, and advocating. Hopefully compromise will be the word of the day.

The City Council will be in the actual chambers of the Creve Coeur City Council, 300 No. New Ballas Road, 2nd Floor; 63141 (map). It will run from 9:00 - 11:30 AM. Sign up by clicking here!
Addressing North Korea and the World
Civitas Think Tank Project #1

The current situation between North Korea and the rest of the world seems so complicated that many people just want to give up. To others, it's simple: "bomb them back to the stone age."

Reality is somewhere in between. But figuring out what options the United States, South Korea, Japan, China and the rest of the world have requires research and brainstorming. Addressing this issue will be the focus of the first Civitas Think Tank Project.

We'll gather on Saturday morning, September 23, from 9:00 - 11:00 AM at the Civitas office ( map) to study some digestible research on the relevant issues. We'll work in small groups to present information in a way to others that makes sense. Then we'll divide into other groups to consider what options for action (or inaction) might exist, and what impact they would have on individual nations and the world as a whole.

We'll talk about nukes, sanctions, bluffing, psychological profiles of leaders and a host of other factors. You can sign up by clicking here.
New Civitas Book Club!
The Hate U Give

In the fall of 2017, Civitas is starting a fun (and voluntary) book club for students. During the first semester we are reading, ' The Hate U Give' by Angie Thomas. We will have a special event in December where students can discuss their thoughts on this provocative book. For more details, click here.
