April 22 is Earth Day!

What actions do you take to "go green" and help preserve nature throughout the year?

Barb - Much of my work to preserve nature and save our earth revolves around animals. This year I have been lobbying on behalf of the 12 great animals of our planet -elephants, rhinos, lions, tigers, gorillas, leopards, cheetahs, sea turtles, jaguars, chimpanzee, bonobos, gorilla and orangutan. They are disappearing at record rates. 100,000 elephants were poached in the last two years. They will be extinct in ten years if something doesn't change. There are only 29,000 rhinos in the wild and lions and leopards have disappeared from most of their range to name a few of the losses. The United States is among the world's top markets for wildlife goods. I have been working with the Humane Society of the United States on getting legislation passed legislation that would protect critically imperiled species. I can't imagine our world without these great species.

Timmy -  I recycle pretty religiously and I turn off the tap when I am brushing my teeth.  I have proposed composting and a rain barrel to my husband but he gave me a big thumbs down!

Lisa -  I try to go green by recycling...almost everything! From plastic containers, glass bottles and cardboard boxes to the tiniest scraps of paper, I figure that every little bit counts! My recycling bin may be a little heavy on Tuesday evenings, but it is worth it knowing that I have that much less trash filling up our landfills. And even though our office building does not recycle, we each take turns bundling up our paper recycling here and taking it home or to a local charity like the MD SPCA for recycling.

Dana -  I drive a hybrid car. My husband takes it a step further and drives a bike! :)

Karen E. - My "green" habits are still a work in progress! We always recycle our newspapers and  magazines as well as all glass and plastic containers. However, I think I am one of the only people left that still gets their groceries in the store's plastic bags.  That's my next green habit to adopt! Baby steps!

Karen B. - We set our thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs, we  have installed compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), even though I still prefer old fashioned bulbs, we try to drink filtered water from the fridge to cut down on plastic bottles, and if I remember to when grocery shopping, I bring reusable bags. They are stronger and hold more heavy items too.

Lauren - I'm super conscious about using a reusable tumbler for my drinks throughout the day as opposed to drinking water out of a plastic bottle. I try not to even buy bottled water, but if I do, I make sure to recycle them!

April 2016

From the Desk of Barb Clapp...
Only a couple more days until I dance in the 10th Annual Alzheimer's Association's Memory Ball Dancing Stars! I'm so excited and nervous for the big day but my dance partner, Cedric Teamer, and I are feeling well prepared for our dance. I've raised over $32,000 for the Alzheimer's Association so far, but I don't want to stop there! If you haven't already, please support this amazing cause by buying a table, a ticket, donating online, sponsoring or just spreading the word.  Click here to donate.
Thanks again for your support!
