Clay Art Center's New Kiln
Jim Bailey and Studio Manager, Robert Zilli
Last week, Jim and Anne made a visit to the Clay Art Center in Port Chester, New York, to celebrate the installation of their new Bailey Studio Deluxe Auto-Fire Kiln. A large group of artists, administrators, and teachers gathered to meet the Baileys and to hear Jim lead a workshop on the ease of operation  and maintenance of their new Bailey shuttle kiln. Rob Zilli, who is the studio manager at CAC, reported that he had already fired the kiln several times with excellent results. The rest of the group was very excited to learn how easy it is to fire and were really looking forward to creating custom schedules for their own glazes and clays.

The Clay Art Center is a haven for clay artists and students of every level. Under the leadership of Leigh Taylor Mickleson, CAC is a successful place to practice clay making  because of the diversity of programs and the variety of options available to clay artists. There are over 50 practicing artists using this well-equipped space. There are classes for every level, internships and residencies, private studio spaces, a community clay making space, and professional quality workshops available throughout the yearCAC is buzzing with creative energy!

A n impressive curated gallery offers world-class shows 10 times a year.  When Jim and Anne visited last week they were showing "NY, NY: Clay". Curated by Judith Schwartz, it included work by seventeen mid-career clay artists who live and work in NYC. It was a great show as evidenced by their photos.

The gallery is a way of informing the community about the exciting work being made in the field. Next month's show will be an exhibition called "Space and Time" and will feature the juried work of several of the resident artists. There is something for everyone here. To find out more about their schedule of events go to Clay Art Center.

4th GREAT MUG GIVEAWAY!
Vintage Dorothy Hafner

We are still celebrating our 40th anniversary by giving away mugs! Dorothy Hafner had a big career as a ceramist and industrial designer in the 1980s. She eventually moved on to fine art glass as her primary medium. Always an avid collector of her own work, she has decided to "open the vault" which she is offering at Dorothy Hafner Vintage.
Any Bailey order placed between today and June 12, 2016, will be entered into a drawing to win these lovely cups and saucers. Good luck!
What makes Ulster County, NY, so outstanding!

Most of you know we are located in Ulster County, New York. Today I had the pleasure of attending a Chamber of Commerce meeting where two great arts businesses gave presentations about global branding. Tonner Dolls , run by Robert Tonner, and Woodstock Chimes , owned by Gary and Diane Kvistad,  are world-renowned businesses located right here in Ulster County. Both these businesses literally started on their kitchen tables and one of the businesses was a very early customer of Baileys.
Robert Tonner's presentation above,
Alice in Wonderland and Caribbean Pirate Johnny Depp below.

Robert Tonner makes his designer dolls from porcelain and continues to hand sculpt the faces and bodies right here in Kingston. He has a showroom and museum in beautiful Uptown, Kingston. His most popular limited edition dolls have all been male dolls; starting with Harry Potter and Dumbledore, followed by Johnny Depp as a Pirate of the Caribbean, to Robert Pattinson as Edward from Twilight. He makes beautiful fashion dolls as well, often in clothes that he or other famous designers have created. If you come to visit us and our pottery collection please be sure to stop in at Tonner Dolls to see their museum and shop.

Woodstock Chimes founder Gary Kvistad talked about the power of the arts to attract other businesses to our area and bring in tourists as well. Gary reflected on how he had taken a simple idea and run with it to create a product known throughout the world. He's had a lot of fun along the way and has managed to continue playing with his band Nexus despite his busy schedule. Woodstock Chimes has a store here too, which is another reason to visit our area this summer.
Both these businesses give a lot back, not just on a local level but on a global level. I am always impressed with the big hearts of these leaders. They inspire the rest of us to be our best selves and find something or someone to help along the way. We love being a part of the creative community here in Ulster County!
