Spotlight on Business
 H&R Block

Sue and Junior Goshen are the owners of H&R Block franchise in Brazil, Indiana. Sue Goshen's father, William Jones purchased the H&R Block franchise in Brazil, Indiana in 1972. The business was originally located on the corner of Highway 59 and US 40. In the beginning there was Sue's father and one other tax preparer. The taxes were prepared, checked and photo copied. Then the clients would have to return a week later to pick up their return. The clients would have to mail it in themselves.
They soon outgrew the building, so a new building was constructed in 1980 at the current location at 428 E. National Ave. Several more tax preparers were added. In the early eighties the use of computers was implemented. Eventually, this eliminated the need to have the clients make a return trip to the office to pick up their returns. They were able to take the return home with them, which was much more convenient.
The business changed drastically in the late eighties with the introduction of rapid refund. People were excited to file their taxes and receive their check in as little as 3 days. Later, it was possible to walk-out with their check the same day. Once, again the business grew. Now the quick refunds are a thing of the past. However, with electronic filing. refunds are usually received within 3 weeks.
In 2000, Sue's farther retired. Sue and Junior took over the business. It has always been a family ran business and many family members have and continue to work in the business. Currently there are thirteen employees working at H&R Block in Brazil. The tax professionals are required to take continuing education classes each year to stay up to date with the current tax laws. They are looking forward to another successful tax season using their new software program.
H&R Block introduced a new product a few years ago called the Emerald Advance. It allows clients to receive a line of credit against their tax refund before the holidays. This has proven to be very popular with the clients. They will be offer that product again this year, beginning on November 24th. They also have a second look program. People can bring in a self-prepared return or a return prepared by someone else and they will check it for free. If an error is found, then they have the option to allow H&R Block to amend their return for a reasonable fee.
After forty-two years, they still strive for customer satisfaction. They maintain off season hours in order to better serve their clients.
