EDGEWOOD CLUB
Youth of the Month
**Michael J.**

Michael, age 10, has only been a Club member at Edgewood for one year, but he has already conquered many of the lessons the programs aim to teach. Michael exhibits the qualities of character & leadership from the moment we pick him up from school. He is always polite and friendly and the first to offer to hold the door or help a staff member with a task. His good attitude is contagious to his teammates and really creates a positive atmosphere for his team.

Michael's favorite activity here at the Club is the STEM room-he is an eager participant on the First Lego League team, enjoys playing in the Games Room, helping in the Learning Center, & doing projects in the Art Room. "I am just so interested in Legos and have been since I was 4," says Michael. "Lego League is the best!"

"The Boys & Girls Club is important to me because it helped me with learning about new things and new people and I met new friends. The Club has given me high hopes of getting into a good college because of all the things I have learned here. I love it here!"
-Michael, Age 10

Fun Friday Sparks Creativity at the Edgewood Club!

Fun Fridays at the Edgewood Club are a great excuse for engaging our kids in some hands-ON learning. We recently took the opportunity to learn about murals and all the kids got the chance to channel their inner Michelangelo or Da Vinci and create their own mini murals!! They had a great time and each got to take home their own personal "mural" that they had posted up on the wall and created themselves. We had some very serious artists in the bunch & really had a great Fun Friday!!

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!
We believe that volunteers play a valuable role in transforming the lives of our Club members.  As little as one hour per week can make a positive impact on the life of a child.  Each Club offers opportunities to work directly with youth as mentors, tutors, sports referees and coaches, and teachers of games such as chess, pool, scrabble-or possibly ballroom dancing. If you have a special talent you would like to share- just let us know. The time of greatest need for volunteers is during the middle-to-late afternoon hours during the school year.

OUR NEED RIGHT NOW

We are Actively Seeking:

25 years ago, in a February very much like this one, Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County first became incorporated. From 40 kids in our very first meetings, to serving more than 5,000 kids a year, we have established ourselves as the premier choice for Harford County kids to come after-school and during summers. But what happens in our Clubs? Read on to discover more about our Clubs and check out all of our highlights below to learn more about what we are doing to encourage, inspire, and support #GreatFutures.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County Celebrate 25th Anniversary with FREE Admission to Annual Steak & Burger Dinner

Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County is redefining non-profit events by celebrating its 25th Anniversary of serving local youth with FREE admission to the County's largest event-- the annual Steak & Burger / Youth of the Year Awards Dinner. To be held on Thursday, March 26, 2015, the award ceremony and dinner is an annual celebration honoring the local finalists from the four clubs in the national Youth of the Year competition as well as a thank you to business partners, donors, parents and kids. Last year's dinner saw over 800 business leaders in attendance at the APG FCU Arena where the event will be held again this year.

"We wanted to do something that hasn't been done before to really commemorate our silver anniversary," says Tim Wills, Chief Kid Officer (Executive Director). "This is the largest non-profit event in the County so we thought what better way to say 'thank you' to our supporters and families then to offer complimentary tickets to anyone who wants to attend."

"The dinner will be transformed from its format in previous years to a "giving event," explains Board President, Jeff Foulk, CEO Survice Engineering. "This is our organization's largest fundraising event of the year, and we'll be asking attendees to contribute to the lives of youth in Harford County while hearing directly from those young people. The night is about making a real investment in our counties future."

"In Harford County our large non-profit community hosts hundreds of events, sells tickets and seeks companies for sponsorships," adds Wills. "At the Clubs, we believe in being transformational not transactional. That is the heart of what we are doing this year. Every day we are transforming kids' lives. At this event you will hear that story and be provided the opportunity to help us transform more."

As is the tradition at the event, Club kids in attendance are served steak while the adults dine on burgers, a symbolic gesture recognizing the importance of the youth we serve. "The kids get a kick out of being treated like grown-ups during the evening, and the adults play along making it a big deal as well," says Wills. Texas Roadhouse in Fallston is the Presenting Sponsor for the third year in a row, donating all the dinner entrees, side dishes, and salads.
The evening also includes honoring the four Club finalists and announcing the Harford County winner for the Youth of the Year competition-the highest honor a Club kid can achieve. The winner goes on to the state level competition. An inspirational speaker is also featured with that announcement coming in February.

SMART Girls Witness the
Future of Cancer Treatment

Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County took a group of our SMART Girls to the University of Maryland BioPark, where they visited the not yet operational, Maryland Proton Treatment Center - one of APT's (Advanced Particle Therapy) leading-edge proton treatment facilities that will bring proton therapy, one of the most advanced form of cancer treatments available today, to the Baltimore and the Mid-Atlantic Region. The girls toured the under-construction facility in absolute amazement of the life-saving technology, which will begin treating patients in December 2015.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County Recognized with New Accreditations

25 years of outstanding service to the Harford County community is a huge source of pride for our board of directors, staff, and community stakeholders. This milestone would never have been possible without our commitment to progress and the trust we have built with the community who supports us.

Commitment to Progress:

The Council on Accreditation (COA) is an international, independent, nonprofit, human service accrediting organization. The Standards for Child and Youth Development Programs were developed in support of enhanced programmatic growth and stability, an unwavering commitment to the health, safety, and rights of clients, and producing high quality, measurable results. "We are proud to announce that our Aberdeen and Edgewood Boys & Girls Clubs are now fully accredited by the COA, stated Director of Operations, Derek DeWitt. "We believe that our accreditation will serve to strengthen our continued commitment to providing outstanding services to our local youth."

A Commitment to Trust:

Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County recently received the GuideStar Exchange Gold participation level, a leading symbol of transparency and accountability provided by GuideStar USA, Inc., the premier source of nonprofit information. This level demonstrates our organization's deep commitment to nonprofit transparency and accountability.

"We have worked hard to showcase our progress toward our mission, and our long-held belief in being transparent about our work, to our constituents," said Tim Wills, Executive Director and Chief Kid Officer. "As a GuideStar Exchange participant, we use their platform to share a wealth of up-to-date information about our work to our supporters and GuideStar's immense online audience of nonprofits, grantmakers, individual donors, and the media."
