BEL AIR CLUB
Youth of the Month
**RJ C.**

RJ is a two-year member of our Bel Air Club at the McFaul Center. Since being a member at the Club, RJ has improved in completing his homework during Power Hour and has learned how to better interact with his peers.

RJ loves Power Hour because he truly appreciates having help and learning more. RJ especially appreciates when Ms. Sue, a retired teacher, and Jacob, a Harford Tech student, spend time with him on his homework. According to RJ, "They are very helpful and they inspire me to become a better student." Recently, RJ represented the Bel Air Club in HCC's "Who's Smarter Than a 5th Grader" competition at the college. He did a fabulous job even under all the pressure of a televised competition.

"The Boys & Girls Club is important to me because it's a great place where I can go after school and to meet new students. It has also helped me to get a better education with all the extra help I have received."
 -RJ, Age 10

BULLIES BEWARE!

Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County pride themselves in offering fun and safe experiences for our teens.  With bullying, no school or community is safe, but in our Clubs, every effort is taken to stamp out bullying and promote healthy peer-to-peer relationships, especially among teens.

To continue the fight against bullying, our teen program, The Club, held their 2nd Annual Anti-Bullying Mixer at the Aberdeen Boys & Girls Club. Clubs teens participated in a discussion panel and watched video clips that highlighted the effects of bullying on victims.  After pledging to Stand Up and Speak Out, our teens had a great time with a dance off and pizza party.  Many thanks to Pat's Pizza in Edgewood and the Edgewood Food Pantry for sponsoring the event.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!
We believe that volunteers play a valuable role in transforming the lives of our Club members.  As little as one hour per week can make a positive impact on the life of a child.  Each Club offers opportunities to work directly with youth as mentors, tutors, sports referees and coaches, and teachers of games such as chess, pool, scrabble-or possibly ballroom dancing. If you have a special talent you would like to share- just let us know. The time of greatest need for volunteers is during the middle-to-late afternoon hours during the school year.

Happy New Year from Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County! We are thrilled to announce that we are turning 25 this year!  And what an amazing journey it's been- read on to discover more about our history in Harford County and check out all of our highlights below to learn more about what we are doing to encourage, inspire, and support #GreatFutures.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County
Turns 25!

Every child follows a path in life.  For many that path will lead them to a door ... a door that gives them a place to learn, to grow, to belong ... a place to forge Great Futures.  For 25 years the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County have opened their blue doors to over 35,000 County youth.

It all began in Aberdeen, where a group of concerned teachers, the mayor and a city commissioner, banded together with a common purpose- to provide a safer and more educational alternative for out-of-school time. In 1990, the first group of 40 Aberdeen kids met in the basement of Grove Presbyterian Church.  25 years later, Boys & Girls Clubs are serving nearly 4,000 kids at their 5 Clubs in Harford.

Today, when you walk into a Club, you can see a lot of exciting new things such as STEM labs, high definition music studios, and hot meals at dinner time.  Incredibly, Club members continue to pay just $20 a school year.  Aberdeen made the very first investment in Boys & Girls Clubs that launched a movement to better serve our community's youth.

Thanks to the City of Aberdeen, the Clubs are looking forward to the future and the next 25 years, for which we foresee reaching more kids, more often, and in new segments of the County.
2,000 Toys Distributed to Harford Kids Thanks to BGC Partnership with TODAY Show

Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County distributed approximately 2,000 toys during the holiday season to our Club kids and in-need families.

Thanks largely to the generosity and success of the Today Show's annual toy drive, we received toys for every age from major brands like Hasboro, Hess, vTech, TOMMY Toys, and UPPA Baby. This partnership has touched the lives of all of our Club kids over many years, and we are so grateful for the opportunity to give our kids a happy holiday.

In 2014, TODAY Toy Drive raised approximately $30 million worth of in-kind donations, putting smiles on the faces of more than 3 million children through 172 family non-profits in all 50 states and on military bases abroad. In the 21 years since its launch, the TODAY Toy Drive has received a total of an estimated $393 million in donations from loyal and generous TODAY viewers.

BE SOMEONE WHO MATTERS
TO SOMEONE WHO MATTERS

A recent national report on "The Mentoring Effect" reported that youth who have had a mentor are 55% more likely to go to college, 81% more likely to be involved in extracurricular activities, and 78% more likely to volunteer in their communities.

Each year since its 2002 launch, National Mentoring Month has enjoyed the strong support of the U.S. President and members of Congress. Additional prominent individuals who have participated in the campaign include: the late Maya Angelou, former President Bill Clinton, Clint Eastwood, Senator John McCain, Quincy Jones, General Colin L. Powell, Cal Ripken, Jr., Bill Russell and Usher.

As you might have guessed, being an international celebrity is not a prerequisite to becoming a wonderful mentor. Join us on Wednesday, January 14th at the Havre de Grace Club to learn more about becoming a mentor or to engage in great activities with your current mentee. Find out about all of Harford County's special mentoring programs this month HERE. Call Kim at 410-638-3389 to RSVP.
