"Helping out in Power Hour is my favorite time," says Gena. "I like seeing Club members grow and improve while setting goals for the future. It's a great feeling." -Gena

"The Club is my second home. Everyone there keeps me happy, and I enjoy being there with all new opportunities waiting for me every day. I appreciate the things I have learned here." -Gena
Kiss a Pig!

It is Kiss-A-Pig Season!  Throughout the Summer, our dedicated candidates will be fundraising and hosting events for the privilege of kissing the pig!

How the Campaign Works:
Each candidate seeks donations that buy votes. The candidates with the greatest number of votes is named Most Valuable Puckerer at the Maryland State BBQ Bash. Each dollar donated equals one vote; the more generous the donation, the more votes for the candidate.

Summer is well underway and BOY IS IT HOT! Of course, heat hasn't slowed down our Club kids.  The Summer Enrichment program is off to a great start with Builder's Week, our Club members created underwater robots for Sea Perch, and our Young Leaders Academy is traveling near and far as they set out to collect 300 volunteer hours! Our Summer is filled with lots of exciting activities, programs, and fundraisers. Check out all our highlights below to learn more about what we are doing to encourage, inspire, and support our local youth.

Builders Week
Vulcan Field Trip It was Builders Week at the Havre de Grace Club! Our members had a blast exploring at the Vulcan Materials Company! Each club will experience a week of their summer curriculum in the fields of Architecture and Construction which will expose them to activities and opportunities that could guide them in the right direction for their future.
Butterfly Watch
It's BUTTERFLY WATCH 2014! Miss Danielle at the Aberdeen Club helped the kids feed a caterpillar all the parsley he could hold. He's a black swallow tail and only eats parsley or Queen Ann's lace. They watched him grow and he is now a chrysalis. Butterfly due date: July 13-18!
Young Leaders Academy
Filling out Practice Applications at Buffalo Wild Wings
Weeks 1 & 2 of our summer Young Leaders Academy (YLA) was filled with exciting opportunities for fun and learning. These aspiring leaders are already gaining life skills, developing career goals, and getting job experience. Our YLA participants will have the opportunity to earn up to 300 volunteer hours this summer.

In week 1, our Young Leaders toured the restaurant and kitchen at Buffalo Wild Wings. They were given lunch, and had the opportunity to fill out a practice job application and engage in a Q&A session with the hiring manager.

Our YLA teens also enjoyed an IronBirds game, compliments of the
Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation.

In week 2, Sue Manning from Freedom Credit Union launched our financial literacy sessions with a Money Matters tour of the Bureau of Printing & Engraving in Washington, D.C.

The Young Leaders Academy is a teen career explorations program focused on preparing youth for jobs in the future. Through this program, teens, ages 13-16, have the opportunity to create a portfolio including a resume, cover letter, and goals for the future.  During the summer months, they spend time shadowing Club professionals, visiting local companies and listening to guest speakers.
Sea Perch Water ROBOTS!
The Army sponsored a Sea Perch competition out on APG, Saturday, June 21. Over 25 teams competed. Teams made underwater robots that maneuvered through an obstacle course and picked up 'treasure boxes' off the bottom of the pool.

Many thanks to the Army for supporting BGCHC's STEM program with resources and instruction to build the robots and for hosting the competition. It is our 3rd year participating in the competition.

BGCHC hosted a testing session at the Aberdeen Family Swim Center to prepare for the competition on June 7 where many of the teams were able to practice the course and to work out problems with their robots. Check out some of our pictures from the competition and the actual building process. SEE MORE PICTURES
17th Annual Vi Ripken Diamonds in the
Rough Benefit Golf Tournament
Vi Ripken registers our Hole Tenders in the early hours of June 2nd
Although rain forced a reschedule from its original date in May, our 17th Annual Vi Ripken Diamonds in the Rough Golf Tournament went off beautifully June 2 and the weather couldn't have been nicer! Thanks to all who participated in this annual fundraiser that raised over $22,700 to provide scholarships to summer camp for Club kids. See you again next year!
Comcast Newsmakers Interviews BGCHC Director
Yolanda Vazquez takes a few minutes on NBC's Comcast Newsmakers to interview our very own Executive Director, Tim Wills. Tim has the opportunity to discuss the founding of our first club in Aberdeen and our 24 year history in Harford County. Here at Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County, we have a very different meaning for the word, "disadvantaged." Find out who we consider disadvantaged in our community by watching for yourself.
