Youth of the Month
**Sean H.**

This a young man of integrity, motivation, honesty, hard work, comedy and love. He is always willing to assist the Club staff and younger members whenever he can, with any task. Sean has been a Club Ambassador for three years and we are so pleased with his willingness and dedication. Sean participates in the Young Leaders Academy, Passport to Manhood, Pool Club, and Magic the Gathering (mini-Club at Bel Air BGCHC).

When Sean isn't at the Club or school, he is spending time with the Boy Scouts working towards becoming an Eagle Scout. He is only 13 with big dreams and high hopes to make a difference in the world. He plans to work at the Club one day as he goes through school to become an engineer. With just one smile and hello from Sean, your day is sure to be a little brighter.

" The Clubs have greatly impacted my life. They've given me the knowledge to be a good citizen, a good leader, and good friend. I want to be a Club ambassador, Youth of the Year, and eventually work for the Clubs."

It was an amazing summer for all of us at the Clubs, and we're kicking off another awesome school year. We opened at 3 pm on September 8th, and what a day it was! We welcomed our new Club members, got some homework done, and made new memories.

We would also like to announce the opening of Valley of the Haunted at Camp Hidden Valley. It's a spooky attraction guaranteed to scare! See our Camp's transformation this October -- if you dare. We still need a few volunteers and tickets are available now. For more information please click  Here.

Valley of the Haunted

Do You Dare Enter the Trail?

Over 200 years ago, on the property of what is now known as Camp Hidden Valley, a wheat farmer and his wife, along with their young son Topher, moved to the quiet countryside of Maryland, near Deer Creek. The Valley family longed for a better way of life in the quiet hills of the rural suburb and all was well for many years, or so it seemed.

Topher developed a dark, obsessive fascination with clowns after visiting a traveling circus that came through town. He began to hear the high-pitched voice of a clown named Zee, which began to fill Topher's young mind with many dark and dangerous ideas. Late one fall afternoon in October, Zee seized the opportunity to carry out his deadly plan using Topher as his accomplice. Ringing the dinner bell in a maniacal rhythm, Zee declared, "It's time!"

Like a puppet, Topher unleashed Zee's reign of terror until all that remained were the two of them, alone on a misty trail in the dark woods along Deer Creek. As years past, Zee would drive Topher to invite even more of the undead into their lair in the woods to fulfill their mission of ridding the world of all forms of human life. Each year since that fateful day, every evening in October, Topher Valley rings the deadly bell to summon the dead to walk among the living and claim as many victims as possible, fueling Zee's thirst for blood.

Do you dare enter the Valley of the Haunted to experience Topher's trail of death on his nights of reclamation?

What Will Education Look Like In 2025?

Our Club members in Bel Air and Edgewood got a sneak peek during our Summer Enrichment Program. Visitors from the Human-Computer Interaction Lab at the University of Maryland brought some of the projects they are developing to share with us. We learned about our respiratory and circulatory systems while using  an Xbox Kinect to track our heart and breathing rates as we bounced, danced, ran, and (amazingly!) did an outrageous number
 of push ups.

Many thanks to Dr. Tammy Clegg and Dr. Jon Froehlich for spending two days with our kids.  Their team inspired us all to enjoy  learning about our bodies while actively using them. We even got a mat h lesson mixed in! Can't beat that!

Hero's Week at Aberdeen

We were privileged to have Officer Raul of the Aberdeen Police Department and Colonel Daniels of the Havre de Grace Police Department put on a K-9 demonstration for our kids over the
summer. Our Club Members were able to witness real life heroes in person. The officers held a Q & A about their professions and  the  dogs they work with.

Arco was brought by Officer Raul, and Benny by Colonel Daniels. Arco demonstrated his ability to search f or
and find explo sive s. Benny, not to be outdone, presented her ta ke
down skills. Officer s use special padding on their bodies to safely demonstrate and practice thi s critical skill.

Our youth were able to pet and play with both dogs, throwing balls across
the field.  The dogs were super  friendly and loved all the attention they received.

A special thank you to all our undercover Heroes, right here in Harford County.

We're Building a Community Garden
COMING SOON! The Aberdeen Harvest of Hope Garden- a new community garden project in Aberdeen. Located within a food desert- an area that lacks access to healthy affordable foods- the field behind our Aberdeen Club site will be transformed into a flourishing community garden and outdoor learning lab, providing community members with access to land and affordable fresh healthy produce. The garden will consist of individual/ family plots utilized for the purpose of food production, teaching gardens, and an outdoor learning for our Club members. The mission of Aberdeen Harvest of Hope is to increase access to local and affordable healthy food choices in the community. In the long-term, we expect improved health outcomes and increased community engagement. Our plans call for construction of the garden in Fall 2015 to be open in early Spring 2016, and we can use your support.

There are many ways to get involved, from volunteering in the garden to Eagle Scout project opportunities. For more information contact our AmeriCorps VISTA, Anne Otih, [email protected] or 410.272.0010x15
