**Courtney B.**

While Courtney has only been a Club member a short time, she shows leadership in her group on a daily basis. She always participates in activities and encourages new members to join. She says she likes all the staff for helping teach her new things, and especially Ms. Jen who helped her learn how to play pool.

"I really liked coming to the Boys & Girls Clubs. It was only my first year, but I learned so much and every week I made new friends."

In the early morning hours of Saturday, August 23rd, we readied ourselves to welcome 100 runners to our beautiful campgrounds in White Hall, Maryland for The Hardest 5K in Harford County.  The course, which is mostly trail, has many technical segments with significant uphill and downhill sections, but that didn't trip up our participants.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!
We believe that volunteers play a valuable role in transforming the lives of our Club members.  As little as one hour per week can make a positive impact on the life of a child.  Each Club offers opportunities to work directly with youth as mentors, tutors, sports referees and coaches, and teachers of games such as chess, pool, scrabble-or possibly ballroom dancing. If you have a special talent you would like to share- just let us know. The time of greatest need for volunteers is during the middle-to-late afternoon hours during the school year.

OUR NEED RIGHT NOW

We are Actively Seeking:
Math & Reading Tutors
Food Servers

Happy September and Happy Back-To-School! Homes are emptier and backpacks are heavier, as our community youth files into classrooms for the start of the new school year.  Clubs are bustling as well- we opened at 3pm on September 2nd to lots of new and familiar faces. After a great Summer, our staff is pumped for the start of our After-School Program.  This month we are celebrating the winners and participants of our Camp Hidden Valley 5K, we are welcoming a new board member while saying good-bye and thank you to others, and we are gearing up for a whole bunch of September events that will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County. Check out all of our highlights below to learn more about what we are doing to encourage, inspire, and support #GreatFutures.

BGC Swim Team Meets Michael Phelps!

The BGCHC Penguin Swim Team had the opportunity to meet Michael Phelps at his Meadowbrook Aquatic & Fitness Center in Baltimore over the summer.  They even got to participate in a Q&A session with the gold winning Olympic athlete. It was a day of pure excitement for our team and they left full of energy and motivation to go for the gold!
Builders Week

During Builders Week, Club members participated in various activities that allowed them to get in touch with their inner builder. During rotations, members were given the chance to build different structures when given certain materials in the games room and in the learning center. In the games room, members were given the entire rotation to work in groups to build the coolest structures. In the learning center, they were given time limits to build the tallest structure and in the STEM Lab, they worked on building the strongest bridges.

Extreme Family Outreach Partners with BGCHC

Thanks to a new partnership between Extreme Family Outreach and the Boys & Girls Club at our Windsor Valley Site, our youth will now be participating in EFO programs every Thursday in the Fall and Spring! Last Thursday the children came running excited and ready to learn and have fun. The message: Your words can change someone's world or break their hopes, we need to be careful what we say. Lets encourage one another, and change the world!

Strawberry Picking at Shaw Farms

Aberdeen Club sent their 8 and 9 year old group to Shaw Farms for "Agsploration" Week. The group learned about planting and growing berries, as well as different types of cherries, apples, and orchards. The group was then given the chance to pick their own strawberries, which they got to keep and eat. Although it was a hot day, the group enjoyed the experience of gathering their own food from nature, many for the first time, and being able to eat some truly fresh fruit.

AT 3PM SCHOOLS ARE OUT, AND CLUBS ARE IN!

In Harford County, we provide nearly 4,000 kids with a safe place to learn in the after-school and summer hours, but there are many more thousands of local children who are not taking advantage of our services.  Join us in our movement to spread awareness about our Club services, and make a donation to help support the growth of our organization.  Together, we can make a difference that lasts for generations.

Colonel Edward Hopkins
Appointed to Board of Directors

Colonel Edward Hopkins
Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County is pleased to announce the appointment of Chief Deputy Edward Hopkins as a new member to our board of directors.

Colonel Eddie Hopkins, is a lifelong resident of Bel Air, former Chief of Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, which he's been a member of for 40 years, and has been a Bel Air Town Commissioner since 2007, serving as the town's Mayor from 2011 to 2013.

Hopkins was a Harford Sheriff's Department Deputy for 27 years, joining the agency in 1976 and rising through the ranks before retiring in 2003 as a lieutenant. He served as a spokesman for the Sheriff's Office both as a deputy from 1994-2002 and later as a civilian following his retirement from 2003-2005. After serving as the Director of Communications for the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services from 2005 to 2007 and Deputy Director of Operations for the Maryland Emergency Management Agency from 2007 to 2012, Hopkins returned to the sheriff's office in November 2012 to again become public information officer and chief spokesman. Now as Chief Deputy at the Sheriff's Department, the Colonel will be a welcome addition to our Board of Directors.
