Lancaster Liederkranz Beer News
June 13, 2018
Saint Vitus was a Christian saint of legend from Sicily who was martyred by co-ruling Roman Emperors Diocletian and Maximian in 303. Saint Vitus' Day is celebrated on 15 June, or 28 June in the Gregorian calendar. In the late Middle Ages, people in central Europe celebrated the feast of Vitus by dancing before his statue; this activity eventually passed its name on to the neurological disorder known as Sydenham's chorea. Vitus might also be considered the patron saint of dancers and of entertainers. Brewed according to centuries-old traditions on the Weihenstephan hill, the Bavarian weizenbock beer Weihenstephan Vitus was acclaimed in 2011 as the World's Best Beer. Generating a respectable 7.7% ABV, the complex 16.5% OG grain bill is well balanced by only 17 IBUs of hop bittering. Praised for its medium body, creamy texture and long finish, fans love the banana, clove and wheat aromas which combine with floral and citrus flavors. Celebrate! Also available at the Liederkranz are two other excellent representative beers from this outstanding producer. The Pils mpours a lovely golden-yellow and bright, and the 30 bittering units let the drinker know this one is a bit more hoppy compared to most of the other Pilsners around. A centuries-old brewing tradition on the "hill" generates great tension between the malt and hops. Enjoyment is guaranteed. The 5.4% ABV Hefe is not one their commonly available beers and is well balanced with light clove and banana flavors and light (14 IBU) hopping. LLK is pleased to have at least one Weihenstephan beer on tap almost all the time. Their wonderful beers reward every sip.
Liederkranz patrons can currently compare two great examples of Belgian wit biers. These are unfiltered Belgian Style ales, pale and cloudy, with decent level of wheat, and sometimes oats. Almost always spiced with coriander and orange peel; other spices or herbs may appear in the back ground. A village called Hoegaarden, near Tienen in Flanders, is the modern birthplace of Belgian white beer. Hoegaarden monks were the first to discover the unique recipe for wheat beer around 1445. Once a brewing center, the industry had died out and was revived by Pierre Celis in the 1950's. Manneken Pis (the Little Piddler) is a landmark sculpture and since the 1600's has been one of the best-known symbols of the people of Brussels. The Hoegaarden Manneken Pis Belgian White combines this beloved image with 500 years of brewing expertise. A sunny, satisfying ale, it features the aroma of orange peel, coriander and herbs that the merry monks originally imported from tropical Curacao.
The Lefebvre brewery began in 1923 by Jules Joseph Lefebvre. Five generations later, there is still a youthful determination and family spirit present in the brewery. Operating in Quenast, southeast of Brussels, the typical Wallonian Blanche de Bruxelles was developed in 1989 and has been brewed ever since. A delicate, 4.5% ABV ale, it's as refreshing a beer as you would want on a warm day. Brewed using 40% soft wheat, Blanche de Bruxelles has a naturally opalescent color with a very white, dense head. Coriander and orange peel added during wort boiling lend a slight but unobtrusive spiced nose. Although soft and smooth on the palate, as is typical of these wheat beers, this light and well-balanced white ale still has a fresh presence. Its complex aroma and modest alcohol content make Blanche de Bruxelles a beer like no other.
Drouin is a family distillery near Pont l'Évêque in Normandy known for producing traditional high-quality Calvados, but their popular Cider Poiré is a traditional French beverage made by fermenting Pear Juice. Several varieties such as Plant de Blanc, Muscadet, Avenelle and Poire de Grise are quickly crushed after picking and fermented naturally for 5 to 8 weeks. It's clear in color with gold high lights in the glass with a delicate nose showing pear flavors and slight citrus. The mouthfeel is refreshing; fruity and semi-sweet. Lots of pear fruit balances against moderate tartness, acidity, and tannins. Low in alcohol and high in flavor!

Lancaster Liederkranz beer drinkers enjoy quality regular beers and an array of rotating items. If one of the beers has gone off tap, ask your bartender to suggest a similar, tasty replacement.
