Social Networking - an Essential Tool for Getting Ahead
by Linda Richmand, CPC, PCC

The ability to optimize the power of social networking tools is quickly becoming an indicator of success. Whether you are looking for a new job, more customers, a life partner, or something to do this weekend, chances are you will achieve your goal faster if you are up-to-date on how to navigate social networking sites.  Meetup.com has made meeting people with similar interests a lot easier.  Match.com and similar sites have replaced blind dates, bars and the grocery store as top ways to meet your future spouse.

Jobseekers who have been out of the marketplace for only a couple a years are finding themselves having to navigate a whole new world.  Traditional listing websites such as Monster and Simplyhired are quickly being replaced by networking sites such as Linkedin and Facebook.  These sites have found new and innovative ways to help people network and find jobs and recruiters to find candidates. In a recent article, Linkedin and Your Job Search, the author observed, "... LinkedIn has reached a point where it's almost unprofessional not to be on LinkedIn. There are members from all 500 of the Fortune 500 companies. LinkedIn members comprise 130 different industries, and include 130,000 recruiters."

Furthermore, according to a study published last month by MBAOnline, one out of every six workers used social media to get hired in 2010.   The same study found 18.4 million people used Facebook to find their jobs.  Incredible!

It is important in the coaching industry to stay up-to-date on the tools people are using to get ahead.  What better way to do so than to use these tools in my own business....
