Iyar is a month filled with days both serious and joyful from Sefirat HaOmer, and Lag Ba'Omer to the Yamim. (I am sending this out a few days before Rosh Chodesh so that it will arrive before Yom HaShoah.) I hope you find the information in our newsletter useful. If CJL can be of assistance to you in any way, please be in touch.

Iyar 5776 -- May 2016

Are you ready for all the holidays?
Holidays in Iyar:
On Yom HaShoah V'Hagevurah we remember those who were murdered in the Shoah (Holocaust) and the heroes who resisted. It is held on the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

Yom HaZikaron is Israel's Memorial Day. It is a very serious day when we remember all those whose have died fighting for the safety and security of Israel and those who have died in terrorist attacks.

Yom HaAtzmaut is Israel's Independence Day. It is a day of great celebration. Sixty-eight years ago on the fifth of Iyar, Israel signed its Declaration of Independence.

Pesach Sheni (second Passover) is one month after Pesach. It was a day when Jews who were not able to sacrifice on Pesach (because they were ritually impure) could bring their offerings. Today it is celebrated by eating a piece of matzah.

Lag Ba'Omer, the 33rd day of counting the Omer, is celebrated with picnics, bonfires, and first haircuts. It marks the end of a plague among Rabbi Akiva's students. It is also the Yahzeit of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.

Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) celebrates the day in 1967 when Jerusalem was reunited. On this day, the Kotel, Judaism's holiest site, once again became accessible to the Jewish People.

CJL's E-NEWSLETTER
This newsletter is published on the first day of every Jewish month. We welcome your feedback and invite you to join us as we explore the joys of Jewish learning in Milwaukee and beyond. Share your feedback here.

CJL'S MISSION
The Coalition for Jewish Learning, the Education Department of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, promotes and advances Jewish education in the greater Milwaukee community, provides a support system for the community's institutions of Jewish learning, and forges coalitions to ensure excellence in Jewish education.
Have you heard of TED Talks? There is a Jewish version called ELI talks (Inspired Jewish Ideas). Periodically I will share a new video from the site. This month's ELI talk follows our Israel theme. It is called: " Shifting the Paradigm: Student Empowerment and the Start-Up Nation" by  Ira Rickman, Student, University of Maryland

CJL wants to create a dialogue about Jewish education in Milwaukee. By sharing our ideas, we can enhance the future of Jewish education for our community. After watching the video, email me your thoughts. I will include some responses in next month's newsletter.

CSI - Milwaukee is CJL's Congregational School Initiative. The program includes classes for teachers, seminars for educational directors, grants, school assessments, curriculum writing, and consultation.

The Jewish Community Foundation of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation is sponsoring this program in partnership with area synagogues, agencies and day schools.  Together, we will create an even brighter future for our community.
