I hope that everyone is enjoying the summer. The only holiday in the month of Tammuz is a fast day (see below). School is not in session. Many teachers are taking some well deserved vacation. At CJL we are busy planning for the fall. Please note the "Save the Dates" in this issue. Also, we have added a link to a job board for those seeking employment in Jewish schools. Wishing everyone a relaxing and meaningful summer.

Save the Date for the 5777  Salute to Jewish Educators
Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017 3:30-5 pm
Harry & Rose Samson JCC
Join the community as we celebrate and honor the hard work of all our educators.

Nomination forms will be available in August. Start thinking about who you would like to see recognized this year.
CJL's Theme for 5777 is:
Project Based Learning
In the coming year, our CSI classes will focus on Project Based Learning. This approach to education strives to make the learning more student driven, authentic, concrete, and meaningful. If you haven't heard of Project Based Learning, this video is a good introduction.

NEXT (through Gratz College in Philadelphia) is offering an online class about Problem Based Learning (same as Project Based Learning). Milwaukee Jewish Educators can take this class for FREE through a CJL grant. Other NEXT classes will have the cost partially funded as well. Read more here.

What would you like to see CJL do in the coming year? Please be in touch by email with your ideas.
Fast of the 17th of Tammuz
The 17th of Tammuz (observed this year on Sunday, July 24) is a fast day on the Jewish calendar. This fast day commemorates many sad things that happened on this date, including:
  1. Moses broke the 10 Commandments (after seeing the Golden Calf)
  2. The walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Babylonians in 586 BCE
  3. The walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans in 69 CE
  4. More than 4,000 Jews were killed in Spain 1391 CE
  5. The city of Prague was burned and looted in 1559 CE
  6. The Kovno Ghetto was "liquidated" in 1944 CE
The Fast of the 17th of Tammuz is observed during daylight hours only. This year the fast is held on the 18th of Tammuz, because the day before is Shabbat. In Milwaukee the fast will be from 3:45 am until 8:56 pm.

The 17th of Tammuz marks the beginning of the "Three Weeks" when Jews traditionally mourn the destruction of the First and Second Bet Hamikdash (Holy Temple) in Jerusalem. These three weeks culminate in the fast day of Tisha B'Av (this year August 14).
