Tishrei and all of its joyous holidays are behind us; we can now truly "dig in" for the rest of the year. Mar Cheshvan may not have any Jewish holidays, but it is filled with wonderful learning opportunities for teachers and for the general community. I hope you will be able to take advantage of the many exciting classes that Milwaukee has to offer.

CJL'S MISSION

The Coalition for Jewish Learning, the Education Department of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, promotes and advances Jewish education in the greater Milwaukee community, provides a support system for the community's institutions of Jewish learning, and forges coalitions to ensure excellence in Jewish education.

Mar Cheshvan

The month of Cheshvan is often referred to as Mar Cheshvan / Bitter Cheshvan, because after all the fall holidays in Tishrei, there are no Jewish holidays at all this month.

Of course, this month does include Thanksgiving, which is based on the holiday of
Sukkot. Read more about the connection between the holidays here. This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce the  mitzvah of  הכרת הטוב (Hakarat Hatov) which means recognizing the good. Judaism is filled with opportunities to recognize the good in our lives, from saying Modeh Ani (thanking God for returning our souls) when we wake up to saying blessings on food, beautiful sights, and new experiences. Many studies have shown a link between gratitude and good health. For ideas about teaching הכרת הטוב (Hakarat Hatov) see these links:
For Teachers Wanting to Increase in Jewish Knowledge:
Please join CJL for a Chai Mitzvah Group. This monthly class will enhance your Jewish learning and give you ideas to use in the classroom. Contact Tzipi for information about dates and times. Don't miss this exciting opportunity!
A Personal Journey
to Share with Friends

Chai Mitzvah
combines study, ritual and social action, providing the framework for a meaningful Jewish journey.

There are five components to the nine-month  Chai Mitzvah experience:
  • Group study - meet monthly with a set curriculum
  • Independent study - choose a Jewish topic you would like to explore
  • Ritual - chose a ritual or spiritual practice to incorporate into your life
  • Social Action - either individually or as a group, choose a local volunteer opportunity
  • Celebrate! At the end of the nine months, acknowledge the journey with a celebration, receive a certificate, and have a tree planted in Israel in your honor through Chai Mitzvah's partnership with Jewish National Fund.
To learn more, or to join our Chai Mitzvah group, contact Tziporah Altman-Shafer.

Jewish Education Survey
It's not too late to provide valuable input. Hurry! The survey will close soon.

The Milwaukee Jewish Federation has convened a Task Force on Jewish Education. We are exploring ways to strengthen Jewish education in Milwaukee for students from kindergarten through age 18. We are looking at formal Jewish education (such as day schools and religious schools) and informal education (such as Jewish camps and youth groups). Ultimately the Task Force will make a funding recommendation about Jewish education to the Federation board.

We have created a survey that asks questions to reach as many people in the community as possible. We would appreciate it if you would share the survey on social media. The survey should take no more than 15 minutes to complete.

Take the survey  hereIf you have questions about this survey please  email  or call Tzipi at 414-963-2718 .
