In Sivan we celebrate the joyous holiday of Shavuot. As educators, we assess the past school year and take a well deserved break from the classroom. CJL is also reflecting on the learning we have done together. Below you will find a video that summarizes the year.

Shavuot
Shavuot, the "Feast of Weeks," is celebrated for seven weeks,  exactly 50 days after Passover.  It is connected to an ancient grain harvest festival and the giving of the Torah.

Shavuot is one of the three  pilgrimage festivals of ancient Israel (the others are Sukkot and Pesach) when the Israelites were commanded to appear before God in Jerusalem, bringing offerings of the first fruits of their harvest. 

Today, Shavuot is celebrated by hearing the 10 Commandments read from the Torah, all night Torah study, and eating dairy foods. If you would like to learn more about Shavuot, check out these links:

The Coalition for Jewish Learning, the Education Department of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, promotes and advances Jewish education in the greater Milwaukee community, provides a support system for the community's institutions of Jewish learning, and forges coalitions to ensure excellence in Jewish education.
 
Generous Funding Available for 
Milwaukee Jewi sh Educators to  Attend Conferences an d Classes! 
 
**The Jerry Stein Education Fund is providing matching funds to grants available from CJL for NewCAJE. Milwaukee Jewish Educators may be eligible to attend NewCAJE for very little or no cost. Financial need is not a consideration.** 

Teachers, your work is invaluable to the future of the Jewish Community. We want to support you as you continue in your professional growth. Apply now for a grant to attend a Jewish Education Conference! 

CJL is pleased to provide funding for teachers who would like to attend Jewish Education conferences. Funds for up to half the cost of attending the conference (up to $1000) are available. The Jerry Stein Education Fund will match the CJL funding. The funding will be paid as a stipend after documentation is provided that the teacher attended the conference or class.  

The following rules apply
1) CJL will fund a teacher to go to conferences no more than 3 times over a 5 year period. 
2) The conference must be related to what the educator teaches (School Directors will be contacted).
3) After the conference, the educator will either write an article for the CJL Newsletter or do a presentation at a CSI class to share what (s)he learned at the conference.
Conference grants will be decided by a CJL committee.

 


CSI - Milwaukee is CJL's Congregational School Initiative. The program includes classes for teachers, seminars for educational directors, grants, school assessments, curriculum writing, and consultation.

MJF's Israel Center is in need of hosts for Israeli teens July 7th-10th (teen mifgash) and July 10th-11th (Israeli scouts) and for four months next year (Shin Shins). Learn more about the Shin Shin program here.

Create a Jewish Legacy is a program that helps individuals and families create legacy gifts, providing a permanent source of support for the Jewish causes they care about.  The program is founded on the principle that all of us, regardless of age, wealth or affiliation, can make an enduring financial impact.

The Jewish Community Foundation of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation is sponsoring this program in partnership with area synagogues, agencies and day schools.  Together, we will create an even brighter future for our community.
