September 2013

Did you have a wonderful swimmable summer? We sure did! The fun doesn't have to stop just because school is back in session. We have plenty of fun fall events coming up, and we hope you can join us.

Save the date for the 2nd Annual CleanWaterFest on Saturday, October 19!

The weather is supposed to heat back up again. So during this hot spell, we partnered with Southern California Edison and the South Coast Air Quality Management District on some energy saving tips that also improve air and water quality. It's all connected!!!

This fall, the Coastkeeper Garden kicks off our monthly workshop series.

Coastkeeper's contribution to a regional green abalone genetic study was published in the August issue of Conservation Genetics. Get the scoop here!

Thank you to everyone who voted for Peter Gartner in the Cox Conserves Hero contest. We will not find out if he won until September 16. Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter to find out the results.

We remind you to join us for Coastal Cleanup Day on September 21 and announce a new way to engage with us using #pollutionpic.

2nd Annual CleanWaterFest with Noble Ale Works
CleanWaterFest 2013
You need clean water to make great beer. In 2012, Coastkeeper harnessed this connection to celebrate 40 years of the Clean Water Act. The first CleanWaterFest proved that clean water supporters and craft beer lovers make a perfect pairing. To continue this harmonious relationship, we are proud to announce the 2nd Annual CleanWaterFest on Oct. 19 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm at Whittier Law School in Costa Mesa.

Anaheim-based Noble Ale Works is partnering with Coastkeeper to help bring out a big crowd for this year's event. Noble and our event sponsors understand that clean water and a growing craft beer industry are essential for Orange County's tourism-based economy. Join us in sampling craft beer and local fare , and you'll help support Coastkeeper's efforts to keep our beaches and waterways clean.

You can purchase your tickets today by visiting our event page: www.coastkeeper.org/cleanwaterfest. Learn more about our sponsorship opportunities here.

Thank you to our Grand Cru sponsor Biosynthetic!
Saving Water Saves Energy & Helps Air Quality

thermostatYou are probably looking forward to the end of this heat wave as much as we are. While the A/C units are cranking, we got together with Southern California Edison and the South Coast Air Quality Management District to provide some water, energy and money saving tips that also benefit the environment. We call this the Water-Energy-Air Nexus!

In case you are wondering why all of a sudden Coastkeeper is talking about energy and air, it is because they are all connected! For example, when you turn on your tap, it takes energy to extract that water from the source, treat the water to safe drinking standards and move that water to your home. Read the full article here and share these tips with your neighbors, friends and family.

Green Abalone Research Published in Conservation Genetics
Since 2011, Coastkeeper has participated in a collaborative study addressing the viability of restoring the green abalone population in the Southern California Bight. Now the preliminary results of this research effort have been published in the August 2013 issue of Conservation Genetics. Researchers collected genetic samples from wild green abalone along mainland Southern California and the Channel Islands to determine the degree of difference between individuals found in different areas. Preliminary results show that wild green abalones are related, thus making a regional restoration effort more effective.

This preliminary informational study is the first of its kind. The study shows that while regional habitats vary, restoration from captive bred abalones is possible. The research states that in order to effectively breed abalones in captivity, the broodstock could only be first generation. These findings mark an important step in recovery criteria outlined by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Abalone Recovery and Management Plan (2005).

The study was a collaborative effort by the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Orange County Coastkeeper, the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation, Get Inspired!, Inc., the Vantuna Research Group at Occidental College, and the School of Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences at the University of Washington.

The Coastkeeper Green Abalone Restoration Project is in need of additional funding. Individual donors can adopt a family of abalone for only $25, and we will send regular updates of how your abalone family is getting along. To get involved as a donor or diver, contact Amanda Bird at amanda@coastkeeper.org. Read the full study here.
Share Your Pollution Pic of the Month!
Styrofoam littering beach near Santa Ana River mouth #pollutionpic @occoastkeeper
Just in time for Coastal Cleanup Day, we would like to introduce a new way to engage with us on social media and help be Orange County pollution watchdogs! Pollution on our riverbanks, beaches and waterways is not only an eyesore, but a threat to our health, safety, and marine life! Litter and debris in urban runoff is a major cause of polluted waterways and beaches. Our decisions on land are causing major problems for the health of our waters and sea life.

We want to put the spotlight on pollution in Orange County and we need your help (and cameras). One Styrofoam cup or a few cigarette butts may not seem like much to worry about, but we want to show just how huge their collective impact can be. Be a part of Coastkeeper's Pollution Pic initiative, and help us make dirty beaches and waterways headline news every month.

Connect with us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (@occoastkeeper) by uploading photos of debris you spot while at the beach, walking along a trail, or just on the street. Show us your most cringe-worthy photos, and we'll share some of ours. Whether it's plastic bottles trashing your favorite river bank, cigarette butts clogging your local surf spot, or 35 diapers floating downstream (true story), we want to see it! Use #pollutionpic so we can show that trash, debris and runoff are ongoing problems and that we need to continue working towards cleaning up our waterways.

Coastal Cleanup Day
2012 Coastal Cleanup Day
This is a reminder that September 21 is Coastal Cleanup Day! Join us at Huntington State Beach, lifeguard tower #11 from 9:00 am to noon  for a beach cleanup and Japan Tsunami Debris Monitoring survey for the California Coastal Commission.

Every year, on the third Saturday in September, people join together at sites all over California to take part in the State's largest volunteer event, Coastal Cleanup Day. In 2012, over 65,000 volunteers removed almost 770,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from California's beaches, lakes, and waterways. Families, friends, co-workers, scout troops, school groups, service clubs, and individuals come together to celebrate and share their appreciation of California's fabulous coast and waterways. The event is part of the International Coastal Cleanup, which is the largest volunteer event on the planet! We hope that you, your company, club or group of friends will join us.
