Cobb Alcohol Task Force - Mobilizing for Change

DECEMBER 2014

December Updates

In December, the TaskForce thanks and salutes those civic organizations that make Cobb County so vibrant. Civic groups help shape our community culture and way of life. In addition to doing many good deeds, these groups can have a big impact on the attitudes and expectations of the general population in relation to youth and alcohol.

For more information about how Civic partners can continue to be proactive, please visit our website

During this time of year when there are many opportunities to celebrate the holiday season, It is important for all community-based organizations to understand risk management techniques for events where alcohol will be available. Guidelines for reducing risks and/or reasons for choosing to make an event alcohol-free can help mitigate risk and limit youth access to alcohol. Click the following link for the  Alcohol Risk Management Checklist.

Our last General Meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2014, at the YWCA (48 Henderson St. Marietta 30064) at 11:30 AM.  Bring your appetite and an unwrapped toy for our "Toys for Tots" drive.  We will recognize our successes of 2014 and discuss initiatives for 2015. Come prepared to see how YOU can be involved with our important work.

The Drug Free Action Alliance is hosting a webinar on December 11 at 1pm entitled "Parents Who Host Lose the Most". At this time of year when many college-aged students return home and many teens want to celebrate finishing the first semester of school, parents need to know the laws that are in effect in various parts of Cobb County for hosting parties with alcohol. The cities of Acworth, Kennesaw and Austell as well as unincorporated Cobb County have Social Host Ordinances on the books which carry various levels of enforcement and penalties. Register for the webinar here.

SUPPORT TOYS FOR TOTS

When you come to our general membership meeting on December 9, please bring a new toy to support Toys for Tots. We will welcome a representative from the Marine Corp to our meeting who will discuss the program, answer any questions and receive our generous donations. What better way to celebrate the holiday season than by sharing with those less fortunate!

Taskforce Announcements

Winter Holidays - Many college students will be returning home for the winter holidays and often like to reunite with high school friends. Parents should still engage their children in a conversation about underage drinking even though they may send signals that they are "adults" who have been away. Parents should also set responsible examples.  Visit the CAT website to read about Social Hosting as well as the important roles parents play in fostering safe activities for the fall and upcoming holiday season.

Meeting Reminders

Cobb Alcohol Taskforce (CAT) General Meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of each month beginning in January 2015. The time frame remains from 11:30am-1pm.  Please check our calendar for the full meeting schedule as well as meetings of various jurisdictions in Cobb.
