Cobb Alcohol Task Force - Mobilizing for Change            Youth Council

FEBRUARY 2014

Programs and activities for the Taskforce and our Coalition in 2014 received a tremendous and historic launch at the CAT General Meeting on January 14, at the Cobb County Sheriff's Work Release Center.

Thanks to Kristy King and Todd Spann (Cobb County Juvenile Court), Brenda Turner and Samantha Scully (Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Georgia) and Karen Carter (Cobb Community Collaborative) for all the information you shared. And thanks to the Cobb County Sheriff's Office for hosting and lunch!

In February, we are proud to focus on Youth!

The CAT 2014 Youth Summit is set for Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Cobb County Safety Village, 1220 Al Bishop Drive, Marietta, GA.

For more information, and to register, please go to this link, and/or contact Amy Benson at 678-385-1371. Special thanks go to the Education Strategy Team (Irene Barton, Chair), Jeffrey Hughes, Summit Volunteer Coordinator, and Kysha Parker along with Amy at Cobb & Douglas Public Health, for all the work you are doing to coordinate this event.

We will continue to cultivate productive relationships with our other community sector partners, particularly Law  Enforcement. So while we are sad that Sgt. Amie Herd of Cobb County Sheriff's Office is leaving the CAT Board (Congratulations on your promotion!), we are very pleased that Dep. Keith Stevens is joining. Welcome Dep. Stevens, and congratulations on the promotion you will receive as well.

FEBRUARY HIGHLIGHT:

YOUTH PARTNERS

Alcohol harms and kills more youth than all illegal drugs combined. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, alcohol contributes to the top three causes of preventable death (murder, suicide, car crashes) and to preventable injuries from burns, drowning, assaults, STDs, and addiction
.

Youth don't provide, promote or profit from alcohol-- adults do. Youth who ask adults to help stop underage drinking have a positive impact and can effectively help limit youth access to alcohol.

There are many ways that youth can help reduce underage and youth binge drinking! Partner with peers and adults to create alcohol-free events. Be an advocate for community change who challenges adult assumptions about alcohol use. Most importantly, join the Taskforce's Youth Council and attend the annual Youth Summit.

For more information about how Youth partners can continue to be proactive, see this link at the CAT web site.

THANKS TO ALL OUR OUTSTANDING YOUTH PARTNERS.  Follow the "shout outs" to Youth partners on Facebook and Twitter throughout February.
