Cobb Alcohol Task Force - Mobilizing for Change

JANUARY 2014

The holidays and festive gatherings present many opportunities for youth to obtain alcohol. Because of their economic impact as well as other benefits, many communities now observe seasonal activities (such as sporting events) well past New Year's Day.

Thanks to the work of our Sector Partners, especially to those working in Education, Enforcement, Judicial, and Youth, numbers of adults (especially parents) who are engaged in activities designed to keep youth alcohol-free are on the rise.

The Taskforce and our Coalition will work diligently in 2014 to reduce underage and youth binge drinking risks as we always have. The year begins with our General Meeting on January 14, at the Cobb County Sheriff's Work Release Center, and will feature several prominent judicial and non-profit leaders as guest speakers.

The CAT Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) Grant programs are going well. We are optimistic about opportunities for other local municipalities to join those in Cobb County that have already established social hosting legislation and policies.

We look forward to another successful Youth Summit in February. We are revitalizing engagement in the Taskforce Board and our committees. And we are exploring ways to make involvement in activities like Alcohol Awareness Month meaningful and inclusive.

All this and more means that we're going to have an exciting 2014! Join us and work with us!

JANUARY HIGHLIGHT:

NON-PROFIT PARTNERS

Non-profit organizations help shape our unique community culture and way of life. In addition to doing some excellent helping work, non-profits can have a big effect on the attitudes and expectations of the general public in relation
to youth and alcohol.

A broad spectrum of non-profits in Cobb County and the surrounding area connect with the Taskforce and the Coalition in mutual efforts to coordinate the safety and well-being of youth.

When non-profit organizations hold events at which alcohol is available, it's important to understand risk management techniques. Guidelines for reducing risks and/or reasons for choosing to make an event alcohol-free can help mitigate risk and limit youth access to alcohol. Click the following link for the  Alcohol Risk Management Checklist.

For more information about how Non-profit partners can continue to be proactive, see this link at the CAT web site.

THANKS TO ALL OUR OUTSTANDING NONPROFIT PARTNERS.  Follow the "shout outs" to Nonprofit partners on Facebook and Twitter throughout January.
