Cobb Alcohol Task Force - Mobilizing for Change

e-newsletter

MAY 2013

Exciting things are happening! In April, the Taskforce joined prevention organizations all over America in observing and promoting Alcohol Awareness Month. Our RealProof campaign, which was launched in March, continued through April.

The RealProof campaign posters and stickers developed by Mopdog are showing up all over Cobb County. The videos will remain online. To see the videos and find out more, please visit our RealProof web page:  http://cobbat.org/realproof/, Thanks to the Cobb County School District and the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) for their support as partners and/or sponsors for the campaign.

This month, the Taskforce will participate in National Prevention Week (May 12-18), and Underage Drinking Prevention Day (May 13). Thanks to our Education Strategy Team volunteers for their efforts to secure adoption of municipal proclamations that recognize those events; the full list of proclamations will be published in our June edition.

Also this month, the Taskforce begins development of law enforcement training programs supported by an Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) Grant. The grant is funded by the Governor's Office of Children and Families (GOCF).

Please visit the Taskforce web site, www.cobbat.org, to find out more about program and activity updates. Thank you all for your support!

MAY HIGHLIGHT:

BUSINESS PARTNERS

Responsible businesses are valued and supported by the community. Effective business policies, procedures, employee training, and management are keys in helping reduce underage and youth binge drinking.

Businesses can also help reduce the possibility that alcohol legally sold to an adult will end up in a teenager's hands.

Here are some suggestions for our valued business partners to take action: 1) Hire, train, and supervise responsible staff to keep business in compliance with alcohol sales laws; 2) Ensure all sellers/servers know how to verify a customer's age properly and refuse service to minors and intoxicated patrons; 3) Learn and use business best practices for responsible alcohol sales and service by attending a Responsible Alcohol Sales and Service (RASS) Policy Workshop. For more information, check out the following links to Evindi and the Training Institute (TIRV).

THANKS TO ALL OUR OUTSTANDING BUSINESS PARTNERS.  Follow the 'shout outs' to business partners on Facebook and Twitter throughout May.

Taskforce Happenings

Real Proof Campaign Information Will Continue to be Available -
"Real Stories," "Real Facts," and "Real Proof" about underage and youth binge drinking were rolled out continually from March through April 30th. You can still help:  'like' us on Facebook or become a Twitter 'follower' and encourage others to do the same; contact Jeff if you will place a poster in high traffic areas or distribute stickers. Be on the lookout for all of our campaign messages.

Prevention Week Proclamations - The cities of Ackworth, Austell, Kennesaw, and Marietta have responded to requests for proclamations that observe National Prevention Week (May 12-18) and Underage Drinking Prevention Day (May 13).  The proclamations will also recognize the Taskforce and other local organizations for the work they do to promote healthy behavior. All volunteers who can attend the presentations of the proclamations are welcome. For more information, contact Pat Guiliani, Education Strategy Team Leader.

Webinar Alert - "Enforcing the Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL): Accountbility and the Role of the Justice System" is the latest in a webinar series hosted by the Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking (ICCPUD). The webinar will be broadcast on Tuesday May 14, 2013 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. To register, go to www.stopalcoholabuse.gov

Prom Season and Graduation Alerts - A list of all local high school prom dates/times/locations have been shared with all law enforcement agencies who will be on alert during this high risk time for underage drinking. The Taskforce has used our "Real Proof" Campaign as another way to support and promote a safe Prom Season. Moreover, we encourage parents and community organizations to develop and host social events that provide students lots of ways to enjoy all of their end-of-year social activities without alcohol.

General CAT Meeting is May 7 - The scheduled time is 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., at Cobb Sheriff's Work Release Center. Please bring your own lunch; drinks will be provided.

Volunteers Needed for Team Meetings - Please see dates/times on calendar and plan to attend one of these meetings. These team meetings are where the action is; all are welcomed.
