Cobb Alcohol Task Force - Mobilizing for Change

NOVEMBER 2014

SPECIAL ARTICLE

Multiple Cobb Alcohol Taskforce representatives attended the October 2nd Acworth City Council meeting and were pleased to see the Social Host Ordinance passage! Thank you to everyone who played a part in getting this ordinance passed.

Why should governments be concerned with underage drinking? Elected or public official assume a very important and unique leadership role within a community. With that role comes responsibility to protect public health, safety and overall quality of life. Underage and youth binge drinking contributes significantly to crime, violence and a variety of poor social, health, education and quality of life outcomes. In Cobb County alone an estimated $3.1 million is attributable to underage drinking. Governments should not only care about reducing underage and youth binge drinking to reduce overall cost but also to protect public health, safety and quality of life.Read more on the CAT website here.

A huge thank you to all the organizations, schools, groups and friends who observed Red Ribbon Week and recommitted to healthy choices and lifestyle. CAT attended the official kick-off to RRW at Mableton House Ampitheatre on October 22. In November, our featured partner is "government." We salute our elected officials - county commissioners, city council members, school board members, solicitor general, state representatives and senators and others who support the work of the TaskForce.

The next CAT Coalition General Meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at the Cobb County Library (Switzer or "main" branch) in Marietta, beginning at 11:30 AM.

Taskforce Announcements

The Current Nameplate Image Features . . .   Law Enforcement Partners! The community at-large has expressed concern and supports increased (and consistent and Fair) enforcement of all cases involving youth  about alcohol. Contact the Underage Drinking Enforcement Training Center  at www.udetc.org for a wealth of print and online training resources.

Thanksgiving Break - Many college students will be returning home for Thanksgiving and often like to reunite with high school friends. Parents should still engage their children in a conversation about underage drinking even though they may send signals that they are "adults" who have been away. Parents should also set responsible examples.  Visit the CAT website to read about Social Hosting as well as the important roles parents play in fostering safe activities for the fall and upcoming holiday season.

Meeting Reminders - Cobb Alcohol Taskforce (CAT) General Meetings are held on the Second Tuesday of each month from January-May and August-December. They begin at 11:30 AM. CAT Board Meetings are held on the Fourth Thursday in January, March, May, July, September, and November, and begin at 7:30 AM.
