OCTOBER 2014

SPECIAL ARTICLE

Thanks and Congratulations to the first
Cobb Alcohol Taskforce Prevention Champions!

The Cobb County Commission on Children and Youth (CCCCY) helped to make September an historic month for the Taskforce by approving a grant to support Cobb Youth RISE (Resist Individual Substance Enticements). Youth RISE will enhance existing CAT Youth Leadership programs and create opportunities for new ones.

Ms. Shelly Hill and Ms. Penny Warren, current and immediate past CCCCY chairs, presented a check to CAT Board Chair Pat Giuliani at the CAT Coalition General Meeting on September 9.

On September 23, the Atlanta Braves Foundation also became a CAT Prevention Champion by presenting a grant award to Cobb Youth RISE.

We hope these generous gifts will motivate other organizations to become Prevention Champions!

We are happy to highlight our Law Enforcement partners in the month of October! The salute will begin on Sunday, October 5 with the Youth Council Kickoff and Bake Day, at 875 Six Flags Drive, Bldg. 1, as part of Public Safety Appreciation Week.

The next CAT Coalition General Meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at the Sheriff's Work Release Center, 1825 County Services Parkway in Marietta, beginning at 11:30 AM.  City of Kennesaw Chief of Police William Westenberger has been invited to serve as Guest Speaker.

CAT will also observe Red Ribbon Week, as well as OctSOBERFest at Kennesaw State University (KSU).

OCTOBER HIGHLIGHT:

LAW ENFORCEMENT PARTNERS

According to the National District Attorney's Association and the U.S. Department of Justice, reducing underage and youth binge drinking is a key to reducing and preventing crime. So what are some of the ways Law Enforcement partners can help reduce it?

Conduct high visibility enforcement operations (compliance checks, shoulder taps, party dispersals, others). Develop a system to monitor alcohol-related problems associated with community events and specific establishments. Ask underage youth who are caught drinking to disclose the source of their alcohol and implement source investigation protocols. Consistently enforce laws against adult providers and social hosts, as well as minors in possession.

This link at the CAT web site leads to videos with valuable information about Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws.

For more information about how Law Enforcement partners can be proactive, see this link at the CAT web site.

THANKS TO ALL OUR OUTSTANDING LAW ENFORCEMENT PARTNERS.  Follow the "shout outs" to Law Enforcement partners on Facebook and Twitter throughout this month.

Fall activities are happening all  over!! Please Stay Alert! - The new school year has started, and Fall activities like football and tailgating parties become the events that everyone wants to attend. Remember to set responsible examples!
