Code Follow Up Letter |
Dear Business Owner,
I am writing you as a follow up to the May 17th Planning Commission Meeting. During the meeting, many local business owners stood up to discuss how the current (and proposed) code has affected their business. At the request of the Planning Commission, it is in your best interest to present your argument in writing to the City Council in anticipation of the June 28th City Council meeting to discuss adopting (and possibly amending) the newly proposed code.
If you are unsure what to write, may I suggest the following:
- Paragraph 1: Introduction. Tell the City Council about yourself & your business.
- Paragraph 2: Current Code. Tell the City Council how the current code has impacted your business.
- Paragraph 3: Suggestion to New Code. Tell the City Council that you would like to see Section 19.70.080 amended so that the public right-of-way would be reduced from 25 feet to 5 feet, which in most instances allow for your business to have an outdoor display.
- Paragraph 4: Close. Thank the City Council for reading your request, and express hope that they take into consideration your viewpoint for the June 28th meeting.
YOUR Twentynine Palms Chamber of Commerce is remaining very active in advocating for your rights to draw consumers to your business. We will be present at the June 28th City Council meeting. We encourage you to write your letter as soon as possible to allow the City Council for time to review and prepare for the June 28th meeting. If you have any questions or wish to discuss this further, please contact me by phone at 760-367-3445 or by email at [email protected]
Until Next week,
Christine Hoenigmann
Executive Director

ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNERS
|
On May 18th,
the Administration released its final overtime regulation increasing the salary threshold, below which employees must be paid overtime for working more than 40 hours a week, from $23,660 annually to $47,476 annually. This threshold will take effect on December 1, 2016, and it will be adjusted every three years to match the 40th percentile of salaried employees in the nation's weakest economically performing region. In other words, the threshold will likely increase every three years in perpetuity.
Because California state law mandates that all exempt salaried employees be paid twice the minimum wage (currently $10/hour), the current threshold is around $41,000/year. Due to the passage of the $15/hour minimum wage bill, the exempt threshold will rise to $62,000/year by 2022 , exceeding the new federal threshold. Therefore, the primary concerns for CA employers will be related to the timeline and perpetual adjustments. The DOL's short timeline means many CA businesses and non-profits will have to make classification adjustments almost immediately; and its three year adjustment schedule means the federal threshold could surpass the state's threshold at some point beyond 2022.

Mars Near Opposition at Sky's the Limit
Mars was at opposition last week, but is still the second brightest object in the night sky. Jupiter is just slightly brighter. Right below Mars is Antares and to the left is the ringed planet Saturn. This will be the best weekend to catch detail on Mars when it is nearest to the Earth. You should be able to see darker features on the surface, the most prominent is known as Syrtis Major.
This event will start at approximately 9 pm and ends at 12:00 am on Sat., May 28th.
The seasonal sky is very unpredictable and a viewing event may have to be delayed, rescheduled, or
cancelled due to cloudiness, rain, or excessive wind. Check Sky's The Limit Facebook Page or follow
@STL29Palms to learn the latest status of an event, or call Steve at (760) 401-3004.
For more information and to see photos taken through STL's 14" Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, visit the
STL web site at

STL is an affiliate of the Basin Wide
Foundation, a tax-exempt nonprofit organization. Donations to support Sky's The Limit's educational programs
are gratefully accepted.
Raffle Tickets on Sale NOW at the Mobil Gas Station to Support Sky's the Limit!
Support for Sky's the Limit's rebuilding efforts and future projects will be coming from 29 Palms Liquor & Mobil Gas via a raffle announced by owner Jeewanjot Singh. The Singh family was motivated to find a way to support STL after learning of the January theft of its photovoltaic system.
Starting April 18th through Memorial Day weekend (which ends May 30th), 29 Palms Liquor & Mobil Gas will be selling raffle tickets at $1 each with 90% of all monies collected going to the Observatory and Nature Center.
Donations:
Raffle tickets can be purchased inside the 29 Palms Liquor & Mobil Gas (73777 Twentynine Palms Highway, Twentynine Palms, CA 92277) at the register. Winner of the raffle will be notified on June 1, 2016 and will receive a $250 Mobil gift card.
Twentynine Palms Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Christine Hoenigmann assisted in coordinating meetings and clarifying details of the promotion, saying, "This is a shining example within our community of a local business supporting a local nonprofit. I am honored that the Chamber's expertise was sought out to make this raffle happen."
