DOUBLE DIP! With 64 degrees under cloudy skies and 57-degree water, about 150 braved the first Long Beach Polar Splash last Jan. We'll do it again on third Sat. of Jan., following the 30-Minute Beach Cleanup. The cleanup and Polar Splash will be near 1 Granada Ave., next to Rosie's Dog Beach. Justin Rudd's nonprofit Community Action Team (CAT) will be donating $5 to various area charities for every person that participates in the 10 a.m. cleanup and then plunges into the Pacific at 11 a.m., up to $2,000. Participants will be able to choose one of several various causes as they arrive to the event. More details below.
Basically, on the word "go" from the organizers, the group of people will scamper into the water to submerse themselves, and then make a quick retreat.
The whole process happens within minutes or seconds. Bring your cameras to document the fun, and post your photos on Facebook.

Will You Enter the Valentine's Card Contest for Shelter Pets and attend the Yappy Hour Sat., Feb. 13? Win a pizza party! You don't have to be present to win.
Long Beach Animal Care Services, HAUTE DOGS, Justin Rudd, and Westerly School are sponsoring the
6
th annual handmade Valentine's card contest for Long Beach-area students (K-12) to create lovable Valentine's cards for the 120+ dogs and 50+ cats housed at the Long Beach Animal Care Services shelter. Hundreds of cards were submitted last year.
CARDS from adults are encouraged, too, but will not be judged in the contest. Rudd says, "There are hundreds of dogs and cats in our city who are looking for love and affection while waiting for forever homes. Let's show them our love this season. We encourage classrooms, scout groups, church youth groups, and other organizations to create cards for the animals."
Cards should be received at Long Beach Animal Care Services, 7700 E. Spring St., Long Beach, CA 90808, on or before noon on
Sat., Feb. 13, 201
6. Students should place their name, grade level, teacher's name and school name on the very back of the card. Cards will not be returned.
WIN A PIZZA PARTY! The student who crates the winning card will receive a pizza party for their friends, classroom or group (up to 30 people). Judging will take into consideration the grade level of the student, and will be based on creativity, originality, and first impression. The folded cards should not exceed 5x7, and should not include any particular animal's name. Volunteers will randomly assign a card to an animal's kennel. The goal is to get at least one card per animal that will be attached to each pet's kennel through the Valentine's Day week.
PLEASE ATTEND:
YAPPY HOUR HOSTED BY WESTERLY SCHOOL. In addition to the regular shelter hours, the public is invited to come view the cards and their creators, spend time with the animals and "fall in love" during a special Yappy Hour from noon to 1 p.m.
on Sat., Feb. 13, where punch and cookies will be served to human guests by students at Westerly School, soft love songs will be playing, the shelter animals will receive special Valentine's goodies, and awards will be announced for the best Valentine's cards.
Justin Rudd and the Miss Long Beach and Miss Southern California
Cities titleholders will also be hosting the event and conte
st. The Yappy Hour will surely allow visitors time to find a 4-legged sweetheart to love.
Regular hours are Wed. thru Fri. 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sat. thru Sun. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The shelter is closed Mon. and Tues.

Will you nominate an unsung Long Beach Hero? We want to give out checks for $500 and $1,000 to about a dozen heroes!
THE 5TH-ANNUAL EVENT
will be held Sun., Jan. 24, 2016, and each Hero
will be awarded $500 to continue doing the work they do in the community. The Hero of the Year will receive $1,000. Fashioned after the CNN Heroes program, $10,000 was handed out to unsung heroes at a dinner/awards ceremony hosted by Justin Rudd and his nonprofit Community Action Team (C.A.T.) at Bay Shore Church in Long Beach. The event is simply called "Long Beach Heroes" and is funded by CAT's Long Beach Turkey Trot 5K/10K. The program is about, "Honoring ordinary, unsung citizens who do amazing things in our community."
DO YOU HAVE a relative, a friend or a co-worker who is having a big impact in the Long Beach area? In every neighborhood, there are "unsung heroes" - volunteers and paid professionals who go well beyond their expected duties. Perhaps the person you nominate is active in education, the environment, animal welfare, youth or sports. Or, maybe there is no one "category" for which the person champions. We want to know about people you think should be recognized. All ages.
WE WILL
recognize the unsung heroes and help them to financially continue doing what they are doing.
It's simple to nominate a Long Beach Hero
1. Come up with some reasons that you think make your nominee unique and remarkable. Also, think through the kind of impact the person has made here in our community this past year (2015).
2. Go to our online
{nomination form} and tell us about your hero. Remember, in order for your hero to move along in the selection process, it's important for you to answer each question directly on the online form. Remember, the information you share with us will be shared with the general public and media if your nominee is selected.
TIP: We highly suggest that you first write and save the answers to the questions in a word-processing document, in case you want to re-submit your nomination, you can "cut-and-paste" those answers into the form without re-writing them.
3. Be sure to click "submit" when you are satisfied with the info you have typed in. You'll get a confirmation email.
4. Nominations for 2015 Long Beach Hero awards must be received by MIDNIGHT on Wed., Jan. 20, 2016.
5. Make sure that both the nominator and nominee would be able to attend the dinner ceremony in Belmont Shore.
6. Nominees and nominators who are finalists will be contacted by email by Thurs. evening, Jan. 21, 2016.
