Holy Week Services
Holy Week

Holy Week is such a profound time in the life of a Christian. From the Hosannas of Palm Sunday, through the cross of Good Friday, to the resurrection joy of Easter, when we walk with Jesus we discover the secret of this season: the way of the cross is the way to LIFE!

Come join us for this transformative journey.

Maundy Thursday  will be observed on Thursday, March 24 . "Maundy" comes from the Latin word "mandate"  for the new mandate or command Jesus gave us to "love one another as I have loved you".The Maundy Thursday service will begin at 7:30pm where we will join with Jesus and the disciples in footwashing, prayer, and communion. This year we are focusing on prayer during the footwashing time. You can pray through the washing of feet or through private intercession. Pray for your family. Pray for the world. Pray for the church. It was during this night that Jesus asked us to "watch and pray". While we pray, classically trained Sarah Yim and her daughter will be offering quiet instrumental music.

Good Friday services will be held on Friday, March 25 at 12-3pm and then later at 7:30pm. The services will be the Stations of the Cross, where the clergy will reflect on each part of Jesus' journey to the cross. After each group of three reflections there will be an opportunity to participate in the stations in a way that will be healing and empowering.

This year we are blessed to have The Rev. Kathy MacKenzie, The Rev. Cindy Voien, and The Rev. Don Koepke join with Fr. Rob and Mo. Lyn during our 7:30pm Service.

Easter Vigil is a time of devotion anticipating the dawn of the resurrection and acknowledging the light of Christ which is able to overcome any darkness. This service will be held at 7:30pm on Saturday, March 26. During this service we will have a procession of the pascal candle, a candlelight reflection on the promises of scripture, baptisms, celebration of the resurrection of Jesus, and communion. One of the most beautiful services of the church year! [ Special note: This year three of the Edmonds' grandchildren will be baptized. ]

Easter Services will be held at our usual Sunday times of 8:15am and 10am on March 27. Both services will have choir and communion. Bring your bells for the gloria (an ancient tradition), flowers for the cross, and eggs for the hunt (a dozen plastic eggs with non-melting goodies would be great!) After the service Patty and Jeff McDaneld will be hosting an Easter Egg Hunt on the front lawn for the kids.

Together we will deepen our devotion to Christ and make room for the Holy Spirit to empower our lives for service as we remember the way of the cross and the power of the resurrection!

  • Potential Disaster Avoided

Early this week we discovered that our large Modesto Ash tree in the St Frances Garden has a large crack in one of its main branches. If the branches affected by the crack were to fall they would take the arbor and a good part of the pergola with them. Not to mention any person that might be in the area. Tuesday afternoon we met with Jeff Buchannan, the Arborist we consult with. He said that the tree was very unsafe and dangerous. His recommendation was to remove the two branches in question immediately. Jeff will do the work on Friday morning. This was a heart breaking decision to make, not only because it will drastically effect the look of our tree (it will have a large hole in the front) but also because it will take most of the garden's financial resources. Jeff's discounted cost for the work is $1200 (the job will take his crew all day). If you feel led to help with this unexpected expense your contribution would be most welcome. Please talk to Gordon or me. - Thank you for the amazing way that you have supported the Emmanuel Community Demonstration Garden.

    Thank you, Lorra
