MVCC Math Corps awarded nearly $3 million National Science Foundation grant

MVCC Math Corps received a nearly $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation, along with partners Wayne State University in Detroit, Cleveland State University, and a not-for-profit organization in Philadelphia. Math Corps is designed to enhance mentorship, enthusiasm for, and understanding of mathematics concepts, and the grant was awarded to help develop better analysis methods to identify the nature, extent, and reasons for Math Corps’ success with youth learner in urban setting.

“Through the generous support of the NSF, we hope to deepen our understanding of why the program has been so successful and how it can be replicated by other community colleges to enhance mathematics learning, particularly in economically disadvantaged areas,” said Todd Kubica, director of MVCC Math Corps.

MVCC directs the local Math Corps, and will serve 40 rising 7th graders, as well as a number of high school and college students, through a four-week intensive summer camp that includes classroom instruction and fun project-based learning activities.

The high school and college students will participate in a professional development training session at Wayne State the week prior to the start of the camp.

On Tuesday, March 14th, 2017 Stella hit! As the storm continued to persist, we were met with a very serious problem in the Residence Halls: we had a dozen students who had no way to get food. There was no food service on campus, no safe way to drive or walk off campus, no public transit and no deliveries to campus. They simply had no way to get food. As we strategized how to get food to campus, I learned that Jason Carpenter was in the area and on his way to a store. I contacted him and he was overwhelmingly ready and willing to help us. He volunteered to purchase food for our dozen students, deliver it to campus and wait for a reimbursement. When he arrived to the store, it was closed - as was every other store in the area. Jason then continued to help by contacting a connection of his in the area who was able to prepare pizza and wings. Jason delivered it to campus. Jason did all of this during a major storm and he kept persisting until he was able to get the food. We sincerely appreciate how much Jason helped us during the Blizzard.

MVCC awarded $5,000 from Berkshire Bank to support Young Entrepreneurs Academy

On June 15, the Mohawk Valley Community College Foundation, Inc., received a $5,000 check from Berkshire Bank to support the College’s Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) program.

Jennifer Hunt, commercial administrative assistant, and Matthew Nicholl, vice president of business banking, from Berkshire Bank presented the check to Frank B. DuRoss, vice president for community development and executive director of the MVCC Foundation, Deanna L. Ferro-Aurience, director of development, Susan Lincoln, YEA! program coordinator, and Kristen Skobla, director of Community and Workforce Development.

The funding will support MVCC’s YEA! program, an innovative after-school program that takes students in grades six through 12 through the process of starting and running their own real businesses. Students work in close cooperation with local business leaders, community members, and educators to develop ideas and goals, write business plans, pitch to potential investors, obtain funding, develop their brand identity, and more. The program’s ultimate goal is to help students embrace their passion, energy, creativity, and talents, launch a venture, and develop a stronger and more diverse small business community in the region.
