Community Action Month Is Just Around the Corner!

The Partnership will provide an overview of our latest toolkit, NASCSP will provide information about using data to showcase your success, and NCAF will discuss the importance of visibility in our present political climate.

Our branding summit is in two weeks. Have you registered?

When: April 26-27, 2017

Who: Communications Staff, Executive Directors/CEOs, and other Community Action staff and board members who dedicate time and care to branding at their agencies.

To create a path to elevate the visibility of the Community Action mission and values, the Partnership is hosting a Branding and Communications Summit on April 26-27, 2017, in Chicago, IL, at the Courtyard Chicago Downtown/Magnificent Mile.

This event features Nathalie Laidler-Kylander and Julia Shephard Stenzel, experts on nonprofit branding and authors of the book The Brand IDEA, as the keynote speakers to guide our discussion on how we can leverage our Network to increase our visibility.

This summit will bring together Community Action leaders and those in our local agencies and state associations who focus their time and efforts on branding and communications, and we hope that you will join us. Note that this is less of a training than it is a chance for us to gather those in Community Action experienced in communications and leadership issues. It is for agencies that use the national branding as well as those that do not use the national branding. We need expertise on how both to better leverage the Community Action Promise and other branding elements to engage the community in our mission, values, and impact.

April Is Financial Capability Month

Highlight your successes in helping families achieve self-sufficiency through financial capability this month. Join CFED and other organizations raise awareness about the importance of financial literacy, whether it's through teaching family budgeting classes or educating individuals about their options for saving. Seeking Nominations of Collective Impact Initiatives

Seeking Nominations of Collective Impact Initiatives

Spark Policy Institute and ORS Impact are working together on a study to understand the ways in which collective impact has contributed to results for people and communities across the U.S. and Canada.

As part of this effort, they are seeking nominations of collective impact initiatives to be part of this study.

Do you know a site that would be great for the study? Please see the nomination criteria below.

This study will look at mature initiatives that have been using the collective impact approach deeply enough and for long enough to expect to see both systems changes and population-level impacts. ORS and Spark Policy define a mature site as one that is well past the agenda setting and action planning stage, and is at least two years into implementing action together.
The research team wants to look at examples of initiatives from across different issue areas (e.g., education, health, economic development, juvenile justice reform, and the environment) and community sizes, including large urban centers, mid-size cities, and rural settings.

Funding Opportunities

Cultivating Healthy Communities

The Cultivating Healthy Communities (CHC) grant program offered by the Aetna Foundation seeks to support communities' efforts to become healthier places to live, work, learn, play. This grant is geared specifically to local nonprofit organizations that work with underserved, low-income, and minority populations. The grant will support projects that are focused on addressing the social determinants of health and participants' physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being and fall under one of these five domains: Built Environment, Healthy Behaviors, Environmental Exposures, Social and Economi Well Being, and Community Safety.

Relatives As Parents Program

As the nation continues to grapple with the toll of the opioid abuse epidemic, particularly in rural areas, more grandparents are raising their children. The Brookdale Foundation group has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for its Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP). Brookdale will select up to 15 programs to receive a seed grant of $15,000 and ongoing technical assistance to create or expand support services to grandparents and other relatives raising children. Any not-for-profit organization can apply for the program, including aging service providers, county agencies, and health care providers.

Political Activity: Playing by the Rules

The National Veterans Technical Assistance Center (NVTAC) is hosting a webinar "Special Population Series: Employment Services for Aging Veterans" on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 2:00 pm ET.

Older veterans, generally considered those age 50 or above, are one of the largest subpopulations of veterans experiencing homelessness. For many of these veterans, competitive employment is the key to housing stability and quality of life. Unfortunately, while the overall participation rate of older workers in the labor force has increased over the last several years, that trend does not extend to older veterans. This webinar will explore the reasons for this disparity, including stereotypes and employment barriers, and discuss strategies that address the unique characteristics of aging veterans.

The webinar will feature Carol Salter, Assistance Vice President of Workforce Solutions and National Director, SCSEP for Easter Seals, and HVRP grantee staff as guest speakers.
