The Faggiano Museum
The Faggiano Museum in Lecce, Italy, evolved over a 7-year excavation project when Luciano Faggiano broke through a floor to repair a sewer pipe. What he found was layer upon layer of civilization. As the work began they unexpectedly found archeological evidence covering a time span of 2,500 years. The excavation work exposed tombs, granary, cisterns, Templar frescos, and underground escapes. There are more than 5,000 archeological finds all in one house. Andrea Faggiano and his brothers will tell us their story and how their determination and spirit made this a gem of archeological history.

The Works of Italian Paintress Lavinia Fontana presented by Snjezana Smodlaka, Ph.D.
Like other Italian female painters in the Renaissance and Baroque, Lavinia Fontana also accomplished some "firsts" in the art history: a continuous 40-year career; a prolific artistic production of 135 paintings; the first female member of the famous Accademia di San Luca of Rome; a preferred painter of the Bolognese nobility, and later of cardinals and two popes. Her creativity embraced several different themes. In spite of the enormous success and even international recognition during her lifetime, she was, like other women artists of the past, ignored, neglected, and forgotten by the art history and the cultural history of her country.

EXHIBITIONS AND ONGOING EVENTS

Indivisibili (Indivisible)
The internationally acclaimed, award winning movie by Italian director Edoardo De Angelis is now ready to wow the US audience, the Lincoln Plaza Cinema in New York and soon all over North America. In the tradition of the Italian neorealism wave, Edoardo De Angelis depicted the harsh maze of mystery that wafts around the two innocent protagonists, with symbolic, evocative images that transcend into a magical realism. Twins Angela and Marianna play eighteen-year-old conjoined twins Daisy and Viola who have been supporting their family ever since their Papà figured out they could sing, and he and Mamma were wasting the girls' hard-earned money. The beautiful girls can earn as much as 80,000€ a year performing at weddings and first holy communions. The fact that they are part pop stars and part side-show geeks make them all the more marketable. The imagery clashes with the human condition of the two girls whose internal journey is the search for their own individuality, a desire for normality and for youth, which is negated by their family who wants to use them for gain.

Passage: The Art of Yorgos Giotsas
Passage is an artist's vision of the movement of immigrants. Yorgos Giotsas uses materials of the earth to bring a tactile feel to his work, thus engaging us in the journey. His images of immigrants in New York City in the early 1900s could be our grandparents from Magna Grecia (Southern Italy). Yet he does not stop there as he moves us visually through the passage, with heart-wrenching yet hopeful images, of immigrants today landing in Sicily.
