Heart Rate Monitors Help Lake Geneva Students Get Heart Smart
District Strategic Plan Tie-In: Developing The Whole Learner &
Enhancing Quality Facilities & Resources
LGMS and Central-Denison, Eastview and Star Center Elementary schools are rolling out a new heart health component to their PE curriculum.

All students in grades 3-8 are now wearing heart rate monitors during physical education (PE) class to help them learn more about what their heart is doing as they exercise.

Worn on the wrist, the monitors provide constant visual feedback to let students know if they are working hard enough to stay in their healthy fitness zone, or around 70% of their maximum heart rate.  The technology also allows PE teachers to assess each student’s participation and how vigorously they are working.

Students began wearing the monitors on February 6 and will continue to do so in every PE class through the end of this school year and beyond.

“Heart rate monitors are the best way to tell if a student is meeting his or her fitness goal,” said Angie Warren, Star Center Elementary School PE teacher. “They’re also helping us teach kids how to regulate their heart rate and how that relates to their overall health. It’s really motivating our students to be as active as possible during class. Plus, they think the tech is really cool,” she said.
