Being in nature boosts your    mental health!

Spring is a great  season to explore outdoors. Longer, sunny days and mild temperatures make this the perfect time to be in nature.

Spending time in nature has wonderful, positive effects on our mental health. Sitting outdoors in a garden or on a park bench away from the noises of the city can provide a needed boost to our self-est eem , researchers in England discovered.

In California, researchers found that walks in nature  -like a paved path in a local park - can help change the negative patterns in our brain. For some of us, our brains have the tendency to "ruminate," brooding over and over again on the same negative thoughts; such broken-record thinking can contribute to poor self-esteem and depression. A walk in the park not only provides great exercise, but also  improves our mental health.

Getting out into nature is one of the quickest ways we can give our mental health a much needed boost and improve our mood. Put on your sneakers, pack a picnic, and get a dose of Mother Nature!

Go hiking with one of our Compeer volunteers! Richard Gardner leads a hiking group focused on doing wellness activities that promote mental health recovery. You should be able to comfortably walk a mile. Richard's hiking group is located in Berks County and many of his hikes are on the Appalachian Trail.
