Hope everyone in the SUPERGOODMUSIC community had a spectacular
week and got to catch some of the amazing musicians that were in
town - no complaints here as I went to seven different concert
events in the last seven days and they were all envigorating.
LCD Soundsystem at The Hollywood
Bowl was the best show I've seen in Los Angeles this year
- although Manu Chao at The
Troubadour might be a close second.
Having recently witnessed performances from them, as well as
YG, 50 Cent, Atmosphere, Slightly Stoopid, Cypress Hill,
Deadmau5, Nas & Damien Marley, Charli 2na, Lyrics Born,
?uestlove and others - this CONCERT BLAST kind of looks a
little thin to me....so to make both you and I feel better about
the concert calendar, I've included info on a handful of shows in
the not to distant future. Those include a string of funky soul
shows that last through Thanksgiving weekend and a plethora of
shows happening Halloween weekend. FYI - word is that HARD has
already sold out of general admission tickets for Saturday, and
there are only VIP tickets and 2 day tickets remaining.
Since the concert calendar isn't all that amazing this week - I
sought out some other entertainment options that might interest
you. Top on my list is Taste of Abbot Kinney
(@tasteofak) - going down from 3 - 7 pm on Sunday in Venice, where
a gang of food trucks are going to park on Abbot Kinney and serve
super delicious and reasonably priced treats. Also on my list are
two female comedians, both delivering laughs at
Largo - Janeane Garofalo on
Saturday and Sarah Silverman on Thursday.
Somewhere below attending concerts, indulging in food trucks and
comedy, is reading this voter's packet I received in the mail. BUT
it is something I plan on doing and I encourage you to read it
too. Every vote is valuable and this election is critical for our
city and our state!
I don't want to preach very much politics here but PLEASE vote if
you are eligible. And, if you are eligible and are going to vote,
I hope you vote no on Prop Y (raising sales tax in Santa Monica by
1/2 a percent) and make an educated vote on Prop 19.
I don't want this to result in some political diatribe and I get
almost as heated about politics as I do about music - so I hope you
enjoy your respective weekends and weeks.
We will be dishing out tickets to Of Montreal & Janelle
Monae at Hollywood Palladium on October
30th as well as The Spazmatics at Key
Club on Halloween sometime next week in some Trick or
Tweet challenges, facebook postings and who knows what else.
Please check in on the
@supergoodmusic, the
and the blog for opportunities to win the FREE CONCERT
TICKET giveaways.
And I'm out.

SUPERGOOD
RECOMMENDATIONS
by BOOMD

Friday
night brings several storied performers to town, namely
Widespread Panic southern-fried jam rock (Greek
Theatre) and Wiz Khalifa and Yelawolf (The Music Box). Rocking, and
recently world-touring, Krashkarma join The Ruse at The Viper Room while Minus The Bear
brews their rock blend at
The Wiltern. Other
worthwhile concerts are Electric Six and The Constellations
boogying at The Key
Club, Alex Metric at
Avalon and talented
songswriter Mark Sultan gracing Spaceland with his presence.
Saturday,
Beatles fans should consider reminiscing at Orpheum Theatre
over Fab Faux's
coverage of Sgt. Peppers Lonely
Hearts Club Band and Revolver. A plethora of cool hipster rock is
in town too - Interpol and White Rabbits at Greek Theatre, The Temper Trap
and Delphic at Club Nokia, Strength
and Starf*cker
at Echoplex and Surfjan Stevens
at The
Wiltern.
Surfjan
performs again on Sunday at The Wiltern,
conveniently on a night with much less competition in the market
for fans. At the opposite end of the rock spectrum -
Batusis feat. Sylvain Sylvain of
New York Dolls hits up The Viper
Room. Not too much else looks appealing on Sunday to me -
but I wouldn't be opposed to seeing what Corey Feldman's
Lost Boys Ball at House of Blues
featuring Truth Movement is all about.
Monday
more jam legends come to town - but not to the Greek Theatre.
Billy Kreutzman from The Grateful Dead,
George Porter Jr. from The Meters and
Papa Mali are 7 Walkers and they
play at Saint Rocke. Another legend,
Unkle, albeit from a different vein of music (trip
hop) performs at El Rey Theatre. For FREE
options, I like Radars to the Sky at
Spaceland or the weekly
Funkmosphere at Carbon.
Tuesday
night, Dubtroit with Gemmy,
Deathface and others at Detroit Bar
appears to be the most fun line-up. If more light-hearted music is
your thing, sensation songwriter Lights at
El Rey Theatre with Jeremy Fisher
might be good for you. Also, K'Naan
with Paper Tongues at House of
Blues in Anaheim should also be good if
their performance in July in Pomona is any indicator.

Wednesday
brings Gorillaz back to Los Angeles basically six
months after they closed out Coachella - this time to
Gibson Amphitheatre. The concert most likely will
be entertaining, especially with support from
N.E.R.D., but I wonder if the stage backdrop will
be as massive and epic? w00tstock at
Largo also caught my attention, but b with
Mux Mool at House of Blues seems
like the more likely choice for me simply based on location and the
fact that Lotus has been on fire all summer (their Bonnaroo
performance was spectacular).
The
Concert Blast week ends with a handful of diverse options - you
could check out Bruce Beacom, a didgeridoo player, at The
Mint; laugh your ass off with Sarah Silverman
& Friends at Largo; get sweaty
dancing with Free Energy and Foxy
Shazam at The Troubadour or enjoy the
pleasant vocals and melodies of Bilal and
J*Davey at Echoplex.
Like
every week - the above shows are just the ones that I've carved out
of the calendar as being worth attending. Certainly most of the
other shows on the list to the right are - but the ones mentioned
above have my personal endorsement.

Trick
or Treat Music Options
Los Angeles always gets festive around this time of year - aspiring
actors and actresses get to self-cast themselves into their dream
role as a Halloween costume, typically tame aching souls get to
unleash their hidden inner slut without ridicule, tranny's daily
dress is suddenly celebrated. There really is no place like West
Hollywood and the rest of L.A.'s 'hood on Halloween.
That said, this year's Halloween may be more action packed given
that the holiday falls at the end of the weekend. Before West
Hollywood's street extravaganza, several notable artists will grace
stages around L.A.'s greater metro area over the Halloween weekend
- some joining in festive attire, others potentially doing costume
sets, all expected to deliver high quality entertainment. I'm here
to break down the options just in case you like to mix live
entertainment into your trick or treat plans...
Things get started on Thursday October 28th when Danny
Devito and Jack Nicholson host the
quintessential Halloween event - The Rocky Horror Picture
Show - at The Wiltern. While I do not
believe another event will have anywhere close to as much of a
Halloweeny vibe as The Wiltern - it would not be
surprising to find festive fans at Foxy Shazam and
Free Energy at The Troubadour or
funky costumes at Orgone and Corrine
Bailey Rae at Avalon.

Friday is when more "official" Halloween concerts and events are
scheduled. Saint Motel, Nico Vega and Las Vegas'
Imagine Dragons play The Witch
Hunt, a special Halloween themed show at The
Roxy. The Vanguard also hosts a
Halloween costume party spun by Miike Snow. Other
noteworthy rockers perform around town - Dave
Grohl and friends rock Dimebash 2010 at
the Key Club - a concert benefiting the Ronnie
James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund and Stone
Temple Pilots play with Black Rebel Motorcycle
Club at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live -
however, those events are not explicitly Halloween parties.
On the night where midnight marks the official celebration L.A. is
dosed with a multitude of options, particularly in the DJ and
electronic genres. Two shows look to have epic line-ups of top
notch musicianship - the first night of HARD at
Shrine Expo provides an opportunity to see
Rusko, Bloody Beetroots, Crookers, Busy P, Mr. Oizo,
SBTRKT, Sebastian and more and over at
Echoplex Ninja Tune celebrates their 20th
anniversary with Amon Tobin, Kid Koala, Eskmo, DJ
Food and others all scheduled to join the fun. Other
electro or DJ'd Halloween parties include Tiesto
at the Playboy Mansion, Ladytron at Atlas
Supper Club at Cut Chemist at KCRW's
Masquerade Ball at Park Plaza Hotel. The
Masquerade Ball will also have some bands too. If you'd rather see
purely bands and potentially witness a costumed set - I'd suggest
Of Montreal and Janelle Monae at
Hollywood Palladium or Portugal. The
Man with White Denim and
Honeychild at El Rey
Theatre.
On Halloween itself, although it is the end of the weekend
technically, there are a few epic shows that will have you
considering not going to West Hollywood's block party and wanting
to call in sick Monday morning. The Boo Over, the
final installment of 2010's Do Over parties, kicks off at 2 pm. A
guest appearance from DJ Shadow at Crane's before
he takes stage at House of Blues for the
Shadowsphere would be the perfect holiday treat. In
addition to those two DJ options, HARD returns for day 2 with DJ's
A-Trak and Calvin Harris, as well
as Boys Noize, Booka SHade, Nero, AC Slater and
others.
Regardless of what you choose to do, if music is your candy -
you've got a lot of treats to choose from this Halloween
season.

Funk & Soul
Patrol
Its certainly nice to see funky horns getting their respect in
supergood and somewhat mainstream music - on songs like The
Heavy's "How You Like Me Now" and all other
things involving The Dap-Kings with or without
Sharon Jones, on Calvin Harris'
"The Rain," and many others. It is also nice to see old
school soulful acts - especially those emerging from L.A., like
Fitz & The Tantrums, enjoying some success too. But, it is
even better to see a parade of funk, soul and brass on LA's
horizon.
From Orgone this coming Thursday at
Avalon through Karl Denson's Tiny
Universe at El Rey Theatre on
Thanksgiving weekend - there is a healthy dosage of exceptional
funk and soul coming through L.A., which doesn't happen very
often. I advise you make your best efforts to check out at least
some of it.
The aforementioned The Heavy bring their load into
town on November 6th to The Wiltern a few short
weeks after releasing the How You Like Me Now? EP. The
title track appropriately is backed with heavy, dirty, funky horns
(coming courtesy of The Dap Kings Horns on the
recording - which has seen sync placements on several TV shows
trailers and commercials - including a famous Kia commercial). I
have not yet seen The Heavy- but having caught their jam on David
Letterman, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else that Saturday.
The Heavy - Photo by Michael
Maxxis
Within the week following, Mayer Hawthorne & The
County, who are actually touring through some cities with
The Heavy, share their Detroit flavored Stones
Throw soul with an El Rey Theatre crowd.
Their Motown-esque sound is followed five days later on November
17th by rising Dangerbird Records band Fitz & The
Tantrums. If you have not sampled Fitz's debut release -
Pickin' Up The
Pieces which features cuts like "Money Grabber," "Dear
Mr. President" and "Winds of Change" - it comes recommended by
me. The album is beautiful and you're in for a surprise of
throwback soul if you get the chance to see this exceptional
new-ish band live.
While Hawthorne and Fitz are both killing it right now - their
stuff is more soulful and not nearly as funky as Karl
Denson's Tiny Universe. Spearheaded by saxophonist and
flutist Denson, who played sax with Lenny Kravitz
for many years, the 5 piece Universe brings unadulterated funk soul
that is rich with rhythm and littered with jazz tricks and solos.
Although slightly less visible on the mainstream radar than some of
the other previously mentioned artists, it is not for lack of
talent. If you have even the slightest appreciation for funk music
or saxophonists and you are free on November 27th, you would be
wise to check out Denson and his band at El Rey
Theatre.
Regardless of your inclination toward soul or funk - if you dig
either you can't go wrong by opting to see any one of the above
mentioned artists.

Wild
Week in WeHo
I spent most of this week shuttling from Santa Monica to West
Hollywood for a handful of wild and amazing concerts at some of the
town's top small venues.
Manu
Chao at Troubadour was an epic
experience. YG at Key Club with
special guests 50 Cent and Lloyd
Banks provided a nostalgic experience reminding me of 90's
hip-hop shows in Cleveland. The Air Sex World
Championships blew my mind (and possibly something else)
and Charli 2na & Lyrics Born at The
Roxy proved why they've been in the game so long.
Through all the songs and madness - I managed to take a handful of
pictures. You can relive a wild week in West Hollywood through the
lens of the SUPERGOOD camera...
