CPS Weekly Update

From Middle School Principal Mr. Curtis Miller

As many of you know former First Lady, Barbara Bush recently passed away in Texas. Often regarded as one of her best quotes she noted the importance and impact of treating other people with respect and love. “Never lose sight of the fact that the most important yardstick of your success will be how you treat other people – your family, friends, and coworkers, and even the strangers you meet along the way. -Barbara Bush.

The single most important thing, beyond a relationship in Jesus Christ, that we can teach our young people is to treat others with love and respect. Our lives are gift given to us by God to live out here on earth doing His work for His purpose.

Pastor Maack from Lutheran Mission Society provided us a message at Chapel today thanking the students for all Concordia Prep is doing to support the Lutheran Mission Society. The service work or the money we have donated can feel like a small part or small measure to help an organization with 10 compassion centers, but how significant and impactful even the smallest of gifts can have on others who need it. LMS continues to do such important work throughout the Baltimore metro area to bring Jesus Christ to all. Concordia Prep will continue to partner with LMS to bring the much-needed message of Jesus Christ love and sacrifice for our lives, but also to continue to grow young men and women in our school who measure their lives by the way they treat their family, friends, coworkers, and especially strangers they meet along the way. Proverbs 3:27 says, “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” God has given us the hands, feet, and resources to act and we know that God has blessed our students, staff, and families with more good than we will ever be able to count of fully grasp. May we all continue to measure the success of our lives by the way we treat other people as spoke by Barbara Bush, “Never lose sight of the fact that the most important yardstick of your success will be how you treat other people- your family, friends, and coworkers, and even the strangers you meet along the way.”
Blue and Green Day for Organ Donations
Sophomores Victoria and Samantha Lassahn (pictured with senior Elizabeth Higgins ) organized a dress down day last Friday to raise money and awareness for organ donations. The money raised will be donated to the YOLT (You Only Live Twice) Foundation, which was founded by Danielle Beaulieu Class '87 and Jon Class '86 with their son Gavin. Gavin was the recipient of an organ donation while a student at Towson University. The Lassahns chose that foundation because they are both interested in medicine and hoped to help CPS students and parents become aware of the impact of organ and tissue donation. The money collected will be used for transplant housing at the University of Maryland Hospital.
Social Studies Bowl
The Social Studies bowl is a CPS tradition and we celebrated our 20th anniversary this year.  The social studies bowl is a single elimination jeopardy style quiz competition among two teams each team is a pair and they compete against their classmates over several rounds with the hope to make it to the final four rounds held in front of the entire school. This year 32 teams(64 students) from the high school competed in the Social Studies bowl over a month on the following topics; World History, US History, Government, Geography, Law, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, and Current Events. The four teams in the Final Four were Robert Heck/McKenzie Barlow(12), Zach Zittinger/Joshua Maguire(10), Noah Roberts/Andrew Stephens(11), and Robert Hiles/Colton Smith(11).  Heck/Barlow and Hiles/Smith were victors in the semi final rounds. Robert Hiles and Colton Smith defeated the defending champion pair of Robert Heck and McKenzie Barlow and were crowned champions for Social Studies Bowl XX.
