Sustainably Yours:
Community Development and a
Sustainable Just Future!

Proceedings of the ACDA and IACD Conference

The 2017 International Association for Community Development (IACD) and Aotearoa Community Development Association’s (ACDA) joint Community Development Conference was held in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland from 15-17 February.  We were hosted by Unitec Institute of Technology, between their beautiful marae at the Mt Albert campus and the Social Practice department at the Waitakere campus.

The conference brought together community development practitioners from across the world to discuss the application of the UN’s recently-established Sustainable Development Goals. These proceedings are record of that very interesting and enjoyable event, which gave us a space to continue discussing the SDGs. We are grateful to those conference presenters who have developed full papers for the proceedings and for others from the same conference whose work will be appearing in subsequent issues of Whanake.

The conference themes of Sustainable Community Development and Agenda 2030 are now firmly established as driving an international movement. This will continue to be explored in Whanake, Practice Insights, the IACD magazine, and the IACD 2018 conference in Ireland next June. We look forward to continuing this journey together and to the many promising opportunities to learn and build the service of community development.

Focus group.  Community Waikato 20 July

Hui E! and Unitec joined on a research project to find out what behaviours and
processes contribute to quality funding relationships.

This is research for social change and it is about addressing the imbalance of power between funding bodies and NGOs, and allowing the development of more healthy and respectful relationships. A research instrument will then be designed so that community organisations can, with complete confidentiality, rate the funders with whom they interact against these indicators.

The data will be analysed to produce a set of league tables which will be published and enable funders, to receive very valid and direct feedback on their performance.

During our Waikato session we were able to introduce the project which helped design the research by playing an interactive card game which informed the project about funding issues, relationship with funders and priorities.
