Congratulations to Civitas Game Changers
Class of 2017

Thirty-six Civitas students attended five or more activities this school year, thus qualifying to be a "Civitas Game Changer." We deeply appreciate all of their engagement in active citizenship. Hopefully they have been able to improve their critical thinking skills without the burden of external demands.

Each winner has received a certificate and is invited to be our guest to the Cardinal game vs. the Milwaukee Brewers on the evening of Tuesday, June 13.

Additionally, Civitas will "go to bat" for these students as they apply for college and scholarships.

Terrific "Crisis Model UN" last Saturday
-- special idea from Fort Zumwalt East HS

Imagine if you will...three years ago, scientists in Hong Kong began testing on a virus meant to be used as a potential bio-weapon. The mice they tested on proved to do everything that the scientists wanted, but there was a catch. The virus got out. It went through the Hong Kong airport just three days ago, and the first reported case of infection was yesterday (Jade Nguyen, Fort Zumwalt East HS student).

This was the scenario presented at an emergency (Model) U.N. session held at the Civitas office this past Saturday. Also according to Jade, Saturday's commanding Secretary General, the dangerous virus causes nerves/pain receptors to die and consciousness to be lost by Day 7 of infection.

Additionally, by Day 7 cannibalism ensues. The 11 delegates in attendance Saturday had a tough crisis to address. Ideas for immediate concerns were plentiful. How should the world population be notified without causing complete chaos? What should be done with people infected? How can the spread of infection be minimalized? Can a vaccine be quickly created? Can global leaders agree on peaceful approaches and cooperation among nations? Should the Hong Kong scientists face consequences? Are zombies still humans entitled to basic human rights? Dealing with zombies in no way minimized the level of dialogue and problem-solving during this crisis simulation. In fact, during lunch break, students started talking about what they knew of the real global threat of a pandemic occurring. "We are not prepared," said one delegate. Another shared her experience creating a "super bug" at school that resisted antibiotics. The reality of such a potentially global catastrophe elevated the task at hand even higher, and much prioritizing and planning got accomplished after lunch. To see the progressive brainstorming that took place, click here.

Many thanks to Jade Nguyen for taking the initiative in putting together this clever and creative activity. We are looking forward to proposing more opportunities for student-led Civitas workshops in the future! For pictures from Saturday's session, click here.
