TORAH PORTION
Nitzavim - Vayeilech ...
You Stand [This Day] / [Moses] Went
Deuteronomy 29:9-30:20, 31:1-30
You stand this day, all of you, before the Eternal your God--you tribal heads, you elders, and you officials, all of the men of Israel, you children, you women, even the stranger within your camp, from woodchopper to water drawer... -
Deuteronomy 29:9-10
Moses went and spoke these things to all Israel. He said to them: "I am now one hundred and twenty years old, I can no longer be active. Moreover, the Eternal has said to me, 'You shall not go across yonder Jordan.'" -
Deuteronomy 31:1-2
SUMMARY:
- Moses tells the assembled people that God's covenant speaks
to them and to all of the generations who will follow. (29:9-14)
- God warns the Israelites that they will be punished if they act idolatrously, the way the inhabitants of the other nations do.
(29:15-28)
- Moses reassures the people that God will not forsake them
and that they can attain blessings by following God's commandments. (30:1-20)

- Moses prepares the people for his death and announces that Joshua will succeed him. (31:1-8)
- Moses instructs the priests and the elders regarding the importance
of reading the Torah. (31:9-13)
- God informs Moses that upon his death, the people will commit idolatry and "many evils and troubles shall befall them." God tells Moses to teach the people a poem that will "be My witness."

The High Holiday season is starting at CNT.
This Friday night will be dedicating our second Torah High Holiday cover, mantle and yad. We will have the Torahs out

Services begin at 7:30 pm.
On Sunday at 10:30 am the Rabbi will be conducting a class on Yom Kippur in the sanctuary. This is a continuation of the class on Rosh Hashana held last month. We are looking forward to the same great attendance we had for the first class. Immediately follow there will be a bring you own shofar training session. Everyone with a shofar and hot air is encouraged to attend.

CALL TO SOCIAL ACTION
"The Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts." -
Aristotle
Synergy
is a modern play on Aristotle's words. With synergy, more effective outcomes can be achieved when two or more people and/or entities work together for a common cause/goal. This concept has been put into action in recent months in response to all of the natural disasters. Communities have come together to lend their support to those who have suffered considerable loss from the damaging forest fires out west to the death and destruction Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have left in their wake. The meaning of synergy is certainly not lost on the Jewish people who-by the tenets of faith and sheer will to survive--have historically united to fight for something bigger than their respective selves.
As we embark on a New Jewish Year, let us ponder on what we as a congregation can do to make our community and the world at large a better place. To that end, the social action committee at CNT has been renewed and is creating a plan of action for the coming year. We welcome all members to lend their time, talents, and/or resources to the various social issues that will be addressed.
Because our children represent the future, the committee has partnered with the religious school to develop a tentative list of social action projects which compliment the school's monthly theme, encourage student participation, and provide service continuity. There will be an opportunity for the kids to give back to the community in some capacity each month through the end of May 2018. If you feel called to Social Action, please contact Laurie Leader at:
[email protected]
for more information on ways you can help.

NEW MEMBER DINNER
It was a wonderful evening at last Saturday's New Member Dinner...great food, a fun getting-to-know-you game, and great conversation.
The evening came to a close with the mitzvah of CNT children putting together packages for patients at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta,
followed by a Havdalah service.
Thanks to all who attended and helped to make it such a success. Our lead photo this week features Rabbi Prass
and the children passing around the spice box at Havdalah.
