Getting Involved in IABC Helped My Career

I had never heard of IABC until my Toronto-based manager, an IABC Toronto member, urged me to check out the local chapter's professional development events.  My first IABC London event was held at the Grosvenor Club and though the topic is now lost to me, I specifically remember part of a conversation with then-President Scott May.

Somehow we were speaking of involvement as an important part of getting value from IABC and my response was that I had no volunteer time available for the association.

And then one day I offered to help someone with the initial web pages for IABC London.

Instead of simply helping, I ended up as the chapter's webmaster for two years keeping busy with two complete makeovers of the chapter website. It was the beginning of my ten years on the local IABC board taking on roles including communications, membership, finance, accreditation, the four-year commitment in the presidential track and of course volunteering for Virtuoso and judging awards.  Each role had its own challenges and rewards, though at the time I thought that converting our financial reporting from Word to Excel was a leap forward for our chapter finances!
