Awards Committee
It's never too early to start planning to get an award from FAWL! Each year FAWL presents several awards to its members and Chapters at the annual Gala held in June. The FAWL Awards Committee has been working hard on updating the award applications, which will soon be available on FAWLs website, including a new Jurist Award. Check FAWL's website for more information about the awards!
Where is Kristin?
Kristin Norse has had another busy few weeks. She hosted the Leadership Retreat in her hometown of Tampa in September. After that, she participated in a panel discussion entitled, "How to Ask for New Business and Seal the Deal," an event hosted on October 7 by the ABA Women Rainmakers. She also visited the Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association on October 8 for their monthly lunch meeting and spoke about FAWL to members. You can follow Kristin and her travels by following her on Twitter -@FloridaAppeals.
Survey - American Bar Association Commission on Women
Please participate in a survey presented by the American Bar Association Commission on Women in the Profession, designed to measure the impact of grit and growth mindset, two traits that have been shown to impact the success of women lawyers. Initial research focused on the 200 largest law firms. We are now expanding this research to understand more about how these traits influence women lawyers currently practicing law in law firms of all sizes, as well as solo practitioners, non-profit and government employees, and lawyers working in-house. To complete the survey, please Click Here .
The survey will take roughly 15 minutes of your time. NOTE: The deadline to complete the survey is October 22, 2015.
Voting is Now Open for Legal Elite 2016
Voting is now open for all members of the Florida Bar actively residing and practicing in Florida.   Voters should consider lawyers from large and small firms around the state that they have personally worked with or would recommend to others. You may vote for attorneys within your organization, but must vote for an equal or greater number of attorneys outside your firm. Naturally, you may not vote for yourself. And only one ballot per lawyer will be accepted. It's easy to vote. Simply Click Here  to submit your ballot. Voting Deadline: December 1, 2015
Nominate For Super Lawyers
Each year, many FAWL members are nominated for the Super Lawyer list in Florida. In the first step of the multi-phase selection process, attorneys are invited to nominate the top lawyers they have personally observed in action, whether as opposing counsel, co-counsel, or through other firsthand observation in the courtroom. For a list if guidelines or to make a nomination, Click Here.  V oting Deadline: November 2, 2015.
YOUR FAWL PROFILE

FAWL has 34 chapters around the State of Florida and more than  3,000 members. With those numbers, it is important to maintain and update your profile on the FAWL website. Members like to refer cases to other FAWL members in their own county or around the State. Please take a moment to upload a photograph or edit your profile to make sure your contact and firm information is correct. To do this, visit www.fawl.org and click on the "Member Login" box on the right side. Your username is your email. If you do not remember your password, simply click on "Forgot My Password."

Informed Voters Project
The Informed Voters Project (IVP) is a non-partisan project of The National Association of Women Judges. Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara J. Pariente is spearheading the project in Florida and working with FAWL to develop a strong civics education program so that all Floridians understand the importance of a fair and impartial judiciary. For more information on IVP, please visit ivp.nawj.org.

IVP will be relying on local chapters to reach out to judicial circuits across the state to air the "Fair and Free" video introduced by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor in jury rooms. IVP will also be planning presentations across the state this year. If you want to be involved in the planning or as a presenter, please contact FAWL IVP Co-Chairs Olivia Liggio  and Jamie Karpman .

Leadership Retreat Recap
Thanks to all members who attended FAWL's Cigar City Nights Leadership Retreat in Tampa.  Over 60 FAWL members from across the state came to learn about appointments to Florida Bar Committees, enjoy Spanish music and sangria at the Tampa History Center, create a vision of FAWL for the future, and bowl the night away at Splitsville.

If you couldn't make it, don't worry!  Lobby Days is fast approaching-January 10 to 12-offering another chance to network with fellow members and advocate for issues affecting women in our state.  Learn more about Lobby Days by watching the video about last year's event here:   Lobby Days Video.

A Sad Farewell

FAWL recently learned that our Executive Director, Jenny Mahoney, will be leaving us to pursue another opportunity that has come her way.  Jenny has been a passionate advocate for FAWL and has tirelessly dedicated herself to ensuring the organization runs smoothly.  We will greatly miss her, though we wish her the best of luck in her new endeavors.  A search committee has been formed to find a new Executive Director, and Jenny has committed to helping FAWL through a smooth transition.  If you know someone with association management experience who might be the next FAWL visionary, please direct them here: LinkedIn  Career Headquarters or Job Seeker.
Connection
At the Leadership Retreat last month, the PR/Communications Committee asked members to participate in FAWL's "Name the E-Blast Contest." We received over 20 submissions and they were all creative and demonstrated FAWL's dedication to support and encouragement. After careful review, the committee voted to give our monthly e-blast a new name that embodies what we do each month with this e-newsletter - connect members. Our winner is Melanie Smith! Thank you to all the members who submitted names.

BCWLA  The rain did not stop our members and sponsors from coming out to participate in Broward County Women Lawyers Association (BCWLA) Member/Sponsor Appreciation night this past Tuesday, September 29th
at the Fork and Balls Restaurant on Las Olas Boulevard.  BCWLA members and our sponsors enjoyed a fun evening of delicious hors d'oeuvres (meatballs aren't just meatballs at this place!), wine, and merriment.  We were so happy to be able to hold this complimentary event to thank our sponsors and current members for their support and continued membership.  The response demonstrated by the number of people who braved the weather to join us was outstanding.  The weather outside might have been frightful, but the fun inside was delightful!

BWLA  Along with their Faculty Advisor, Judith Koons, Barry's WLA secured speakers from the Orlando area including Leslie Stewart and Suzanne D. Meehle. These speakers are former Barry WLA members and they spoke on their personal law school experiences, the history of WLA at Barry Law, and women attorneys in today's legal profession.  This upcoming school year, Barry WLA has many events planned, including a month-long Breast Cancer Awareness movement. Led by their President, Adekemi Akinwole, the Barry WLA Executive Board plans on raising over $2000 in charitable donations. Be on the lookout for what's next with Barry's WLA!

UM Law  Neda Ghomeshi, President Lauryn Suarez, Vice President, of FAWL's UM chapter, Miami Law Women, recently attended the Women's Fund Luncheon on September 17 on behalf of MLW. The Women's Fund of Miami-Dade supports programs and initiatives to advocate and to lead on behalf of the women and girls in our community. MLW often donates funds to the organization.

HAWL  Doris Weatherford, President of HAWL, recently sent a message to HAWL members on behalf of Kathy Castor, a U.S. Representative for Florida's 14th congressional district. Representative Castor and Doris are asking members to join their support for a statute of a woman at our nation's Capital. Every state is entitled to two statues in the Capitol. "One of ours appropriately honors John Gorrie, the inventor of air conditioning, but the other should be replaced, and Congresswoman Kathy Castor is leading an effort to do that. It honors (Edmund) Kirby Smith, who was the last Confederate general to surrender in the Civil War -- and even plotted to continue the war from Mexico. Moreover, he was only briefly a Floridian: born in St. Augustine, his family moved north when he was five, and he never returned." The Florida legislature makes the decision. If FAWL chapters, both state and local, would write letters to Senate President Andy Gardiner and to their local legislators, that would be very helpful. Let's get a good Florida woman in the Capitol!
