2011 Pastor's Retreat
There is still time to sign up for our upcoming Pastor's Retreat, April 27-28 at Pilgrim Pines. This will be a great opportunity to unwind after a hectic Lenten Season and to develop and renew relationships with other UCC clergy. I would like to extend a special invitation to any pastor who has been in this Conference for a year or less to arrive early for a short orientation and fellowship time. Click here for more information and to register. Registration Deadline is April 18th.
Retirement Housing Foundation Offers Matching Grant for Disaster Relief in Japan
Retirement Housing Foundation (RHF), a nonprofit organization with affiliations to the UCC, has seen the terrible devastation in Japan and, like everyone else, wants to help the victims of this multiple disaster. RHF encourages everyone to respond to the need with monetary donations. For those who respond to this appeal, RHF will match gifts up to a total of $50,000. Individuals are encouraged to write checks to their churches marked "RHF Japan Disaster Match." Each local church should include these funds in their remittance form check and record this as "RHF Japan Disaster Match" in the "Designated for Other Ministries of this Conference" Section:
Our office will collect these funds and report the gifts by church to RHF who will match those funds up to $50,000.00 and send them to the United Church of Christ Disaster Relief Ministries. We invite you to be generous! We also invite you to give this information to families, friends, neighbors, places of worship, co-workers - anyone and everyone. Funds must be received in the Conference Office no later than May 6th in order to qualify for matching from Retirement Housing Foundation\
If you have questions, please contact the Conference Office (626) 798-8082 or Retirement Housing Foundation (562) 257-5000

Visit to Samoa
We have scheduled a visit to the Samoan Islands, September 9-18, 2011. I would like to invite all Church and Ministry Chairs and anyone interested in being part of this delegation please contact our office. There are no scholarships or funding available for this trip. The Samoan Ministry Table is making the arrangements and we will provide more details as they become available.
Report from Chicago Theological Seminary
Recently, I had the opportunity to meet with CTS president and their faculty to discuss the possibility of a partnership with our Conference. This promises to be a great opportunity as we are currently exploring the possibility of hosting a satellite site for CTS in Southern California. Among the items discussed were:
- Three-paths for Certificate of Ministry (Licensed Ministry, Commissioned Ministry, and Leadership Development).
- M.Div. credit for courses taken under the Certificate of Ministry if the person decides to pursue a Masters Degree program.
- An M.Div. program
- A possible partnership with Pacific School of Religion (PSR), Claremont School of Theology and the Disciples Seminary Foundation
- All degrees will be conferred by CTS
This is just the beginning of this conversation. Stay tuned for updates.
Welcome to SCNCUCC:
On the last issue of "Connections" I failed to welcome Norma Chavez-Peterson, who has been called by Community Congregational Church (UCC), Chula Vista as Associate Minister for Community Outreach. My apologies to Norma! Welcome!
The Conference staff will be lifting our churches up in prayer during our Wednesday staff meetings. Every week, Virginia will contact three churches to ask for specific prayer requests.
