December 2012

Greetings!

We've all heard the statistics: despite enormous advancements of women in the sciences, we're still vastly underrepresented, underpaid and underestimated in academia, industry and at the policy level. Whether you're just embarking on your science career or have already achieved success in your discipline, chances are you've faced serious obstacles, the curve balls that have led to the attrition of thousands of smart and talented women from the field: gender bias, lack of self-confidence, a career where work-life balance barely exists.

So we want to know: how did you survive? What issues do you currently face? If you encountered discrimination, how did you overcome it? How did you find the right mentor, discover the right lab, prepare for a career path? A forthcoming guide produced by the Feminist Press will serve as a useful and entertaining manual for succeeding in the sciences. We're seeking stories from established science professionals and students alike that shed light on the problems women commonly face and the solutions that resourceful and determined women have adopted to overcome them.

To participate, simply click on "Submit Your Story" below. You can send in a paragraph about your experience, or arrange to have a brief phone interview with us to discuss your challenges and achievements.

What is Under the Microscope?

UnderTheMicroscope.com, a website funded by the National Science Foundation and The Henry Luce Foundation and built by IBM, collects stories from women interested or involved in science, technology, engineering, and math. A selection of the stories submitted to the website will ultimately be published in a survival guide by the Feminist Press. We invite you to check out our story guidelines and read stories already submitted to the site. UnderTheMicroscope.com also publishes interviews, news, and tips for women in science.

For more information regarding the website, please contact Web Editor Katherine Rowland at editor@underthemicroscope.com.
