Coral Gables is Statewide Leader Using Tracking Technology to Prevent Crime

License plate recognition is one of the many multipronged dragnet strategies implemented in Coral Gables in the last few years to combat crime. Coral Gables is getting so good at using this technique, that we are the top agency - as shown in the #1 light blue pie chart - with the most plate reading detections among all 27 South Florida agencies using the same platform.

How is this meaningful? For starters, criminals in stolen vehicles, expired tags, suspended licenses, or with active warrants can expect their comings and goings being dealt with in real time through the city's new Crime Intelligence Center. Information Technology Crime Data Analyst Chris Cowen anticipates that by the end of this year, the City will capture close to 30 million license tag readings, all with the mission of keeping the bad guys away from the City Beautiful.

License Plate Recognition technology and the creation of the Crime Intelligence Center are two of the elements in a Strategic Plan designed by Assistant City Manager/Public Safety Director Frank Fernandez to create a proactive approach to crime detection and prevention.
Indeed, it's a Beautiful Miracle Mile!

Miracle Mile celebration

Yes, it's finally open and lots of people are coming to Miracle Mile for very good reasons. To be exact, more than 22,000 visitors gathered on April 14th at the Miracle Mile Streetcape opening, according to our pedestrian counters. On an average, about 18,000 daily pedestrian counts are being measured on weekends at both Giralda Plaza and Miracle Mile - thanks to a new Wi-Fi smart network and new street sensors. So, come on down to see for yourself what a great place our Downtown Coral Gables is to have dinner, watch a play, meet your friends, or shop around. There's plenty of parking available at our city garages, and or you can always call on the Freebee available for door-to-door rides around Downtown (for free!) seven days a week from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m.

"Art Washes from the Soul the Dust of Everyday Live"

Famously put into words by Pablo Picasso, here's an image of when "Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life." Dusting away everyday problems - and in the midst of the creative process - are several artists chosen to be part of the Venice in the Gables public art initiative. The Venetian styled gondola posts are being transformed into art pieces that, when finished, will be exhibited throughout Downtown Coral Gables as proof that art is very much alive in the City Beautiful. You too can be part of this once-in-a-lifetime exhibit by participating as a sponsor or potential buyer. Read more...

International City/County Management Association Showcases Coral Gables as a "Smart Community"

According to the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), "smart technology is not a distant ship on the horizon and this ship has arrived in many of your communities," including in the City of Coral Gables.

In the ICMA's recent publication "Smart Solutions: Technology Serving Communities," Coral Gables is the subject of a smart city case study done on 2017, based on interviews to City staff from the Information Technology Department and the Public Works Sustainability Division. The City of Coral Gables is the only city in Florida featured in this case study.

City Manager Cathy Swanson-Rivenbark is a credentialed manager with ICMA, a lead association providing support to more than 10,000 city, towns and organizations throughout the world. The ICMA publication is being promoted as a reference on how to implement a "smart community" approach, like we're already doing in Coral Gables as part of a strategic vision of fostering a  culture of a high-performance organization.
