More than the record quantity, the judges are excited by the quality of the spirits. More established distilleries are now able to enter spirits having several years of age and the clear spirits show increasing finesse and sophistication. Award-winning spirits will be announced Tuesday night, April 4, 2017, at the ADI Conference in Baltimore.

Schatzi Vodka
Andy Nelson created this limited release of of vodka in honor of his wedding. Schatzi, roughly translated into "sweetheart" in German, is a vodka with chocolate and vanilla notes. This commemorative bottle is only available in the distillery gift shop.

Flying Buck Distillery
On December 7, 2016, Flying Buck Distillery began selling Moonshine to a thirsty public. Flying Buck is a farm-based distillery in Augusta WV on US Route 50, about a half hour west of Winchester VA.

The first three products are Moonshine, Naughty Oak Moonshine, and Apple Pie Moonshine. Naughty Oak is an oak-infused moonshine aged 30-60 days. Apple Pie Moonshine is an Applachian classic - Moonshine infused with apples from the farm and apple pie spices. In 2017, the Distillery plans to introduce three fruit-based liqueurs. There will be a Raspberry, a Cherry, and a Peach liqueur.

In the meantime, we've got plenty of smooth-drinking Moonshine.

.25 oz Royal Rose Cardamom 
   Clove Syrup 
4 Dashes Cherry Bitters

Rub the rim of the rocks glass with a lemon swath. Stir all the ingredients over ice. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice and garnish with a cherry.

Niagara distillers - growing in numbers

Chris Jeffries and Andrew Morison, of Niagara Falls Craft Distillers, were excited to open their new venture to the public last Friday. ( see related story link below)

There has been an explosion of distilleries in Ontario over the last 5 years, the latest distillery has setup shop in the Niagara Falls area.
Owners Chris, Andrew and Ian are paying homage to Niagara Falls with their latest venture. "Lundy's Lane 1814 gin, which is a nod to the battle on Lundy's Lane, we are located on Lundy's Lane."
The Niagara Falls Craft Distillers produces and sells small batch vodka, gin, whisky and other spirits in house and starting next month their product will hit LCBO shelves. The distillery is the latest to call Niagara home. Geoff Dillion opened Dillon's small batch distillers in Beamsville in 2013.

"Four years ago there were 3 of us craft distillers in Ontar
io. As of right now, there is something like 22 that have joi ned the Ontario's Craft Distillers Association, so it has been a pretty quick explosion of craft distilling."

Dillon says the built in wine-industry was one of the draws to the region. Niagara College, which is home to Canada's first commercial winery and brewery program announced a distilling one last year. It is set to begin this fall and there is a lot of interest.

Whisky industry trade body joins forces with craft distillers to promote the true spirit of Scotch

Industry trade body the Scotch Whisky Association has signed a collaboration agreement with the craft spirits body the Scottish Craft Distillers Association.The trade bodies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work in partnership "to support the continued success of the entire Scotch whisky industry and its supply chain".

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), the trade body for large whisky distillers, and the Scottish Craft Distillers Association (SCDA), which supports smaller and relatively new craft spirit producers, will support each other but remain as distinct organisations with their own memberships.

Craft spirits among the newest homegrown products to sprout in the Walla Walla Valley

Kevin Hetterley's specialty is pretty much dessert in a shot glass.
"It's like the sweet, sweet taste of apple pie heaven," cooed one woman to a trio of friends, here from Spokane on a girls weekend, during a recent Saturday tasting at Shot in the Dark Craft Distillery.

It took Hetterley two decades to perfect his Apple Pie Moonshine, merging his grandmother's Dutch apple pie recipe into a silky adult beverage that's the signature of his business.

WA food park gets into the spirit of craft distilling

If things go as planned, at least two distilleries will be in operation
at Blue Mountain Station in Dayton, WA next year.

Craft distilleries aren't just for urban communities. Dayton has two up-and-coming spirits ventures at Blue Mountain Station, the Port of Columbia's food park just outside of town.

XO Alambic - owner Rusty Figgins. The XO stands for "extra old," a mark of distinction when it comes to cognac and brandy. "The XO also stands for hugs and kisses to signify that our spirits are made with love and that we give our love to visitors who support our business," Figgins, the master distiller, said. Figgins bears the title "master distiller" with pride, continuing to offer master classes... Read more.
 

 
Central Standard Craft Distillery to expand

Central Standard Craft Distillery said [last week] it is planning to expand into a new facility west of Marquette University's campus to help it meet growing demand. The project will cost $1.1 million and is expected to create nine jobs over the next two years. The new 10,000-square-foot facility is expected to open in July.
Central Standard's co-founders Evan Hughes and Pat McQuillan said the new production facility will enable the distillery to keep up demand while allowing for the addition of new products and for contract products, like the brandy it produces for Kohler Co. A family of self-described "serial entrepreneurs" in Skagway think they've found their final adventure: a craft distillery. After more than a year of paperwork and preparation, Skagway Spirits is set to open this spring. The new business is part of a growing craft distilling industry in Alaska. 
"So I'm gonna put an ice cube in there and a little bit of lime," said Janilyn Heger, as she mixes cocktails in her "test kitchen." She has a bag of lavender-colored ice cubes she made using fireweed petals.
She pours vodka distilled by her son, Lucas, into a glass.
"Classically a cosmo is vodka, cranberry juice,"
