How long have you been talking about starting a new educational alternative? We'd like to help you make that dream a reality!

The 11th AERO Online School Starter Course will begin on September 26th, 2016. That's only 3 weeks away! It will run until January. Enrollment is limited to 25 participants. Up to five people can participate from each site without additional cost.

AERO has helped start more that 100 educational alternatives. You can see a partial list  here. Since AERO's mission is the Education Revolution, we try to help people create as many learner-centered alternatives as we can. This course has been the most effective way we have discovered to help people go from their dream and vision to the reality of a new, vibrant educational alternative.

The course is not in real time except for an occasional optional live Skype or Google chat.  The course is on a dedicated website s o you can access it from anywhere in the world at your own pace and schedule, responding to each section as we open it and responding to the posts of other students in the course. The site has videos, audio interviews, book excerpts, etc.

The two instructors are  Jerry Mintz, director of AERO, and  Chris Mercogliano , author of How to Grow a School and long-time director of Albany Free School.  But the key to the course is the interaction between the students.

You can take the course for up to 3 graduate credits from Antioch University New England. The full course is now $1000 but will rise to $1200 shortly. It is now $1500 if you want graduate credit.

You can get more information about the course or sign up for it  here. It has already started to fill up for this year! Inquire if you need payments or scholarship help.

Peter Gray to Keynote The Second AEROx Gathering  in Massachusetts September 30th-October 2nd

Peter Gray just informed us that he can keynote the second AEROx Regional Conference!

We will return to beautiful  Earthlands Preserve in Petersham, Massachusetts September 30 - October 2, 2016. This year you will be there for early Fall Foliage season

Last year was a big success. There were just under 40 people with a great mix of youth and adults all learning from each other.  You can read more about last year's event here.

This event will have workshops, networking opportunities, and keynoters. Let us know if you want to offer one. Send them to  pberg7468@gmail.com , or  jerryaero@aol.com or write for more information .

The event will also feature plenty of time for networking, forging relationships and impromptu discussion groups.

Lodging is comfortable, rustic style shared rooms with mattresses on floors or bunks in off-the-grid, environmentally sustainable buildings.

People can also camp on the site.

There has been a high demand for an additional AERO event that provides more local opportunities for networking, focused workshops , and action planning that keeps the inspiration and the work of AERO going.

To register go here. See you there.

Ed: AERO was part of the School of Living for its first 20 years. SOL is a pioneering nonprofit that was instrumental in developing the organic farming, and land-trust movements, among other things. Mildren Loomis was the most important early leader of SOL. This is rare and provocative footage.

Mildred J. Loomis, aka "the Grandmother of the Counter Culture" discusses the homesteading movement and her association with  School of Living founder Ralph Borsodi. Loomis and Borsodi both devoted their lives to the promotion of homesteading, decentralism and the Henry George movement.

In This Florida District, Black Students Are Punished Far More Harshly Than White Students
By Rebecca Klein

Kids who attend Richard L. Sanders School in Pinellas County are 58 times more likely to be arrested at school than the average Florida student. It's almost as if the school is "preparing the students for jail," one student says in a civil rights  complaint  the Southern Poverty Law Center filed with the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice on Wednesday.

As Students Return to School, Debate About the Amount of Homework Rages
By CHRISTINE HAUSER

How much homework is enough?

My daughter, Maya, who is entering second grade, was asked to complete homework six days a week during the summer. For a while, we tried gamely to keep up. But one day she turned to me and said, "I hate reading."

I put the assignment aside.

That was my abrupt introduction to the debate over homework that is bubbling up as students across the United States head back to school.
