Last day for make-up tests

In order for our students to be successful, we need your help in the following areas:

Please make sure that your child:
  • Goes to bed early the night before the STAAR test
  • Eats a good breakfast the morning of the test, either at home or at school
  • Arrives to school with plenty of time to get settled to start the day (by 7:45 please)
  • Is encouraged to give 100% effort and do his/her best

We know that our teachers have prepared your child for the STAAR and that each one will be successful.  The students have all worked hard and plan to give their best efforts each day of te sting.

It is very important that your child arrives to school on time. STAAR testing begins at 8:15 am. Students arriving after 8:15 will be held in a late arrival room and will begin testing later in the morning. STAAR is a timed test.   Students have 4 hours each day to complete their test so we should be finished with testing by 12:30ish.

Students may take "brain breaks" during the 4 hour testing sessions to allow them to maintain stamina throughout the testing session.  We have adjusted lunch and specials to allow 4 consecutive hours of testing. If students feel ill and need to visit the nurse while testing, the time at the nurse will be added to the 4 hours.

Students do not bring backpacks on the day of the test.   If your student needs to bring a cell phone, or other internet connected device, it should be given to the teacher to keep and return at the end of the day. If a student has a telecommunication device such as an iPod, cell phone, or smart watch that is visible or heard during testing, the device will be confiscated and their test will not be scored, this is a Texas Education Agency policy.

TO ALL HCE PARENTS:
Parent or visitors will not be invited to come to school to eat with students on Tues, March 28 or
Wed, March 29, to keep all 'commotion' to a minimum.  We are also asking all parent volunteers, except Kindergarten and our one front office volunteer, to not come to school on these two days. We have small group testing in every available space including library, maker space, discovery center...really everywhere but the front office!

Thanks so much for understanding!

CLASS PLACEMENT FOR NEXT YEAR 2017-2018

Now is the time for you to provide us with input for us to consider as we make classes for next school year.  We don't meet with parents to discuss this but will accept the form for you to give us input.

You can download, print and complete a hard copy - HERE
You can return it by scanning and emailing or return your hard copy to your child's teacher.

We will also send home a hard copy you can complete and return.

FORMS MUST BE RETURNED BY APRIL 5th TO BE CONSIDERED.
NOON DISMISSAL APRIL 6 and APRIL 7

We have noon dismissal on April 6 & 7 so that teachers have an opportunity to have an optional spring parent conference with parents who are concerned about their child's progress this year.

There will not be any new testing information to share at this conference. It is only the 2nd week of the last nine weeks so there will not be many grades to review either.

Teachers are happy to meet with parents who have questions or concerns about their child's progress.  Teachers will be sending home information to tell you how to sign up.
Counselor's Corner
By Andrea Chvatal

I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break and a good first week back.  While I was eating dinner at a restaurant with my family over Spring Break, at a table near us was a mother and her two tween children.  What struck me about this family was all three of them were looking at their cell phones instead of connecting.  When the mother would put her cell phone down, the kids were still on theirs and she actually looked bored at the table.  I think I would be bored too if neither dinner companion was talking with me.
We, as parents, get one shot at knowing our children as children, as tweens, teens, and then adults.  If we are not connecting with them - guess what - someone or something else will and it may not be the healthiest connection.

I recently read in The Houston Chronicle (Monday, March 6 th ) according to a new study by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, almost one in three people under 21 said they saw alcohol related content on-line in the previous  month.  Moreover, children as young as 13 were nearly twice as likely to recall alcohol marketing on the internet than adults.  Also, by some estimates, teens spend almost nine hours a day - not including time spent for school or homework - on the internet looking at entertainment media, listening to music, and playing video games.
WOW.  That's more time than I can get sleep most nights.

You might be saying - "I don't have a tween or teen... This doesn't apply."  I want to pose the idea that this nine hours a night does not just happen - it is grown over time.  Think about the time your children spend now in front of any screen - tv, movies, LeapFrog systems, iPad, phone, computer, videogames....  This screen time is time that could be spent connecting with you and others in your family.

How do we pass on love, affection, values and manners if we are not together playing, laughing, coaching and sharing ideas?
A couple of suggestions:
-           make one day a week (Sunday?) a "no-technology" day.  All screen-time is not allowed. You may be surprised about how all of you get more creative in spending your time.
-           Leave phones at home when you are out to dinner and turned off or in another room while you eat dinner at home.  Consider what the time around the table is for and get back to talking about everyone's day and creating a sense of belonging with each other.
-           Engage your family in preparing dinner, helping with chores, planting flowers, sweeping - I would suggest it doesn't matter the activity as long as you are together and present in the moment- there is a host of benefits to families bonding over simple things.

Habits of connection built now will carry your family through the teen years as a strong family unit where your child will seek and find the attention and love they need, and not look elsewhere.
