Mrs. Chvatal, our awesome counselor, h ad the honor of facilitating the Character without Question (CWQ) process for our campus this year, working with fifth grade teachers and staff to chose our 5th grade Character Without Question Award Winner for 2016-2017. The process, in a nutshell, is fifth grade students and all teachers and staff can nominate fifth graders who consistently show exemplary character in the categories of honesty/integrity, responsibility/dependability, respect, perseverance/effort, courage, caring/kindness, citizenship/civic virtue.  Many wonderful nominations were received and reviewed by a committee of faculty members.  We consistently heard from our teachers "There are so many good nominations" or "It's so hard. I want to give the award to so many of these students".  Hunters Creek Community - this is a GOOD problem to have!  Our fifth graders are a special group of people.  They are passionate, curious, excited, intrinsically motivated and leading the way for others to follow in their footsteps.
All three of our finalists are leaders among their peers.  They pursue excellence, are passionate about serving our school and their community and we are proud to have them as Cougars.  The Character Without Question finalists were, front left to right: Kylee Pham, Hayden Haas, and Avery Ramsey.

Avery Ramsey  will represent our school, as the winner, in the 2016 - 2017 SBISD CWQ Ceremony on February 27th .    Congratulations to Avery and her family  as they celebrate this significant honor!  Avery is the second in her family to win this honor.

The Hunters Creek Cougar Coders won first place in Texas in the Wonder League Robotics Competition last week! The group is made up of third, fourth, and fifth grade students and lead by 3rd grade teacher, Mac Rozzell, and 5th grade teacher, Jessica (Wright) Murphy.

The Cougar Coders spent the last two months solving a series of missions put forth by the Wonder Company, which hosted the competition. They used a coding program put together by Wonder and the duo, Dot and Dash.

Our Cougar Coders will advance to a final round where they must solve a challenging mission using the most efficient code. Once they have completed the mission, they will be entered in a drawing for five more Dot and Dash devices for Hunters Creek.

Saturday, Jan 28, Cougar Coders presented a poster session at the STEM Learning Lab Showcase at Westchester Academy.

Pictured are members:

5 first grade students also presented at the SBISD STEM showcase on Saturday, January 28th.  The students demonstrated how they use the BeeBots to integrate math and literacy into simple coding activities.  The kids welcomed others and taught them how to code using the BeeBot.

The math single-subject acceleration test application window is open now through March 3rd (if promoted, your child would receive instruction in the next grade-level of math only).

Credit by exams are free for all SBISD students and require the attached application to be filled out with a parent signature.  Please forward all applications to Andrea Chvatal, School Counselor, either in person or via email: . For example, your child is a 2 nd grader, and you would like him or her to take the credit by exam test, you would check "3 rd grade Math" in order for your child, as a 3 rd grader next year, to take 4 th grade math, if a passing score of 80% or higher is achieved.
Math-only credit by exams will be administered on our campus in April.  The exact dates have not been determined.

Kindergarten students are eligible for testing in the summer before first grade (Spring testing is not available for Kindergarteners).  We will send out a reminder for summer testing in early April.

Feel free to email Mrs. Chvatal with questions or concerns.

hce fields
For those of you new to HCE, Family Fair is our annual after school carnival that takes place on the HCE fields. There will be games, rides, food, cake walk, photo booth, inflatables and much more. This is a fun-filled afternoon for the entire family!
In order to make the fair a success, we need your help.
Each homeroom class is assigned a booth at the fair, and the parents are afforded the opportunity to work in the booth, which our children always love. The shifts are only 30 minutes long, so please be on the lookout for a SignUpGenius from your room parent offering the time slots.
You can also help by donating confetti eggs that will be used at the fair in The Zone for the ever-popular Confetti Egg Wars. Confetti egg donations will be accepted beginning in February in a box near the front office with your child's grade level written on the carton.
The day of family fair, we will need you to donate store bought cakes for our cakewalk. Stay tuned for more information!
For questions please contact:
robyn canterbury, katie clark, alicia kimmel or carrye krouse

Underwriters of $500 or more will be recognized on the back of the Family Fair
t-shirt, which will be given to every HCE student. Donors at all levels will be recognized in the HCE newsletter and displayed in appreciation on the Family Fair Underwriter Banner.  Deadline for t-shirt and banner inclusion is February 10, 2017.
