SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS
SBISD Trustees Seek Input for Possible Enactment of District of Innovation Exemptions
On April 25, 2016, the Spring Branch ISD Board of Trustees (Trustees) voted unanimously for SBISD to become a District of Innovation (DoI), enabling SBISD to exempt itself from certain state laws that pose barriers to innovation related to curriculum, instruction, parent or community involvement, school calendars, budgeting, and governance.
At their October 17 Workshop meeting, Trustees heard a
and engaged in a discussion about four State statutes related to "Time" that pose barriers to learning. In order to achieve the intended outcomes of SBISD's strategic plan, district administration recommended Trustees consider enacting exemptions at this time for two of the four statutes, beginning with those related to length of a school day and the school start date.
FUNDING EDUCATION IN TEXAS
School financing and the actions and activities of the Texas Legislature are crucial to the future of education in Spring Branch.
It's critical that every member of the Spring Branch Family is informed about what's going on related to state funding for public education and budget challenges impacting your neighborhood schools, and other legislative a
ctions affecting the entire Spring Branch Community, including testing and accountability, and full-day PreK.
At the November 16 PTA General Meeting (6pm at The Del) SBISD board members will be speaking about the $17 million deficit budget we are facing in SBISD for next school year. To cut $17 million out of our current budget means cutting people!
I encourage you to take a moment and review the information provided here. Then, share it with a neighbor, a co-worker, a friend. Contact your state legislator. And please, contact us with your questions, comments and feedback.
INFORMATION FROM NURSE MULVEY
Help us keep Hunters Creek Elementary healthy! To maintain a safe environment here at HCE, I ask that you do the following:
Please update your emergency cards with any change of address, phone, cell and/or work numbers as necessary. You can do this by sending a note, an e-mail or calling the front office.
When going out of town, please send a note to the teacher or to the front office with a name and a number of who will be responsible for your child/children. This is important in case a child becomes ill.
To maintain a healthy environment, if your child exhibits any of the following characteristics, it is strongly recommended to keep your child at home.
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea during the night or the morning of school.
- Temperature of 101 degrees or above during the night or morning of school. A child needs to be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school after an illness.
- Conjunctivitis: Eye/eyes are red, tearing, painful, swollen eyelids, crusting. Child may return to school after treatment has begun.
- Streptococcal sore throat and scarlet fever: Child may return to school after 24 hours from date antibiotic treatment begun.
- Thank you for your assistance. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to call or email 713-251-6000 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
By Andrea Chvatal
The last two weeks the students and I have been discussing our responsibilities at school and home. The students saw a video of some HCE staff and community members discussing their career and the responsibilities that come with that particular path. We also explored what might happen if the person chose
not to fulfill their obligations.
In Kinder and First grade, we made a Responsibility Flower where each petal was something chosen to be in charge of. Second through Fifth worked with a partner to decide the most responsible choice when faced with a dilemma.
The students were receptive to the idea that responsibility is not always fun; usually work comes before play if we are to be responsible. Our family is the first place we see work modeled. A strong work ethic is slowly built over time as we show and teach our children how and when to take care of different things.
In my family, my brother and I always helped my dad wash his vehicle. My responsibility was cleaning the tires, since I was the shortest. If the tires or rims had dirt on them once the vehicle was dry, I knew I had to go back and clean again and my dad let me finish the job I started. A sense of pride and self-accomplishment from our work being done well is not something we can buy for our children or only tell them about - it comes through experiences, and children need many, many experiences in order for the learning to take hold. Even though the task may take longer, what can you and your child do together this week to continue his/her learning about responsibility?
PARENT EDUCATION WITH MRS. CHVATAL
Next in the Parent Education Series: understanding The 5 Love Languages of Children by Chapman and Campbell.

This is a book for parents, teachers, caretakers, grandparents.
This is not a book study but an overview of the topic. All are welcome to participate in this one hour session. Join us Monday, December 5th from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. in Rm 7 at HCE.
