Ahhh, technology. The ease of finding information in a moment, or being entertained instantly. I can find a recipe, look at the weather report, or order an item from an app and have it at my house in two days. Good for me. But what about children and technology?
I know many parents use technology as a reward, or limit screen time each day. Each family sets their rules according to the needs and wants of each person. Using research to guide those rules is a good check for any family. Another informative article from The Center For Parenting Education.org reports that overuse of technology (more than two hours for children over two years old) plays a big role in the quality of children's health and well-being. Many deficiencies can form if a child's brain receives more screen time than recommended - yikes! The article reports decreased attention span, underdeveloped or delayed language and critical thinking abilities and decreased intrinsic motivation for learning. Read more
and then make sure your children are getting the hands-on, direct interactions and sensory experiences they so deserve. Their brains will thank you!
In Other News.....
I have some exciting news to share with you! We will have a School Counselor - Intern on our campus completing her practicum requirements through May. Melissa Farber is a former Houston ISD teacher, current HISD specialist, and completing her master's degree through Angelo State University's College of Education. She will be at HCE every Thursday, observing and participating in all aspects of the role of School Counselor. Melissa is excited to be here and I hope you will help me welcome her as she dives into this semester with me.
CREDIT BY EXAM - TO ADVANCE A GRADE LEVEL
Spring Branch ISD's Credit by Exam (CBE) process is
now receiving applications
through February 3rd for spring testing. Spring testing will take place at HCE between March 6
. Advancement to the next grade level is for next school year.
Your child is eligible to take either the four core subject tests (Social Studies, Science, Math, and Language Arts) in order to advance one grade level OR the math single subject acceleration test (if promoted, your child would receive instruction in the next grade level math only).
CBEs are free for all SBISD students and require the attached application to be filled out with a parent signature. Please forward all applications to Andrea Chvatal, School Counselor, either in person or via email:
. Feel free to email with questions as well.
Kindergarten students are eligible for testing in the summer before first grade (Spring testing is not available for Kindergarteners). We will send out a reminder for summer testing in early April.
Message from Ms. Snyder to fourth grade parents: This is an excellent opportunity for advancement for students who
excel in mathematics. Fourth grade parents whose student excels in mathematics should apply to take this credit by exam. If s/he scores high enough on the exam given the student will attend Spring Branch Middle School for mathematics instruction in 5th grade. Students at this level (testing to acclerate through 5th grade and on to 6th grade math) must have solid mastery of the grade 5 TEKS and more when they take the exam.
All HCE parents are invited to attend an information session at Bunker Hill Elementary School to hear Lance Stallworth discuss the math acceleration Credit By Exam process. Your child may be a candidate for math acceleration if he/she learns math easily, loves the learning, does not need a lot of help with homework and scores at least scale score of 1625 on STAAR 5 Math.
