Counselor's Corner
By Andrea Chvatal

This week and after Spring Break, I am teaching guidance lessons on being a problem solver.  We talk about:
1. Making a plan and thinking through all the steps necessary to reach a goal.
2. Using our own ideas and strategies that we already know, and
3. Asking for help from those who might have already experienced the problem.

Giving children an opportunity to solve problems on their own, without us jumping in too quickly, is building their capacity for independence, which they will most definitely need once they are on their own.

When parents either take over (I'll handle this for you) or give only one choice in the situation, ("I told you to ________") both rob our children of the chance to make the critical problem-solving connections on their own.  Showing empathy first, then lovingly handing the problem back, allows the child the chance to get creative, learn from others, develop skills, and increase their sense of accomplishment.

PTA President's Perspective
Family Fair was AWESOME!  A huge thank you goes to Carrye Krouse, Katie Clark, Alicia Kimmel and Robyn Canterbury for all the time and effort they put into planning and preparing for our Texas size Family Fair!  Everything turned out perfect...including the weather!  All our cougars had fun enjoying the carnival games, rides, cakewalk, confetti eggs, silly string, groovy air brushed hats, dunk booth and yummy food.  Another thank you goes out to all our fantastic volunteers who pitched in the make our event a success.  Thanks ya'll!
On Tuesday, our cute 1st graders and teachers put on an amazing Texas play.  Each child created a special costume that represented an important place, event or characteristic of Texas.  The children did great speaking and singing about Texas.  Thank you to all the 1st grade teachers for making this play possible.  We loved it!

Have a wonderful spring break and enjoy your time with family and friends!
