THANK YOU, TEACHERS!

I want to give a huge THANK YOU to our fabulous HCE teachers for preparing for and conducting all their Fall parent conferences.

It takes teachers such a long time to prepare for wonderfully informative parent conferences and then it takes them days to conduct them - on top of preparing for a day of teaching and taking care of their families.  We are grateful for our 2 noon dismissal days but they just put a small ding in finishing all the conferences.

Just think, 20-25 minutes per conference and it takes about an hour to gather all the info and prepare for each conference.  Some of our teachers, who are departmentalized, meet with 40+ parents.  That's 16 hours of conferences and 40 hours of preparation.   That almost sounds impossible - but they do it and do it well. THANKS TO THE HCE TEACHERS!
Counselor's Corner
By Andrea Chvatal

Any chance I get, I promote family mealtimes together.  Research shows that a routine of three or more meals a week, together as a family, yield the most positive benefits for children.  I came across research that tries to pinpoint exactly the benefits of just family mealtime, taking out other factors such as socioeconomic level or one or two-parent households.  Overall, the benefits are there - children are more likely to eat healthier foods and less likely to be overweight.   Family meal times are also linked to higher academic achievement and higher psychological well-being.

The routine of family meals generates feelings of closeness and comfort and dinnertime affords parents a unique opportunity to connect with children as long as the television is off and the cell phones are put away.  I suggest making the table a "no-technology zone" for every meal.  And no guilt if the meal is take-out on the table - you are still eating together, even if someone else cooked the food!  Connecting with your children is key to reaping the benefits.   Read more here.

HELP OUR SISTER SCHOOL - WOODVIEW ELEMENTARY

Our Sister School, Woodview Elementary, would love to have donations of board games to add to their classrooms.  Ideas for donations: Boy or Girl Scout troop collections, in lieu of birthday party gifts, or a family may decide to "adopt" a classroom and donate.  There are 2 Pre-K classrooms, 5 Kinder, first and second grade classrooms, 6 third grade classrooms, and 4 fourth and fifth grade classrooms each.   Thank you, in advance, for supplying these resources for our Sister School!

Brendan Wenzel - Visiting Author/Illustrator

Blue Willow Bookshop  is sponsoring an author visit by Brendan Wenzel for
2nd grade students on  Thursday, November 3rd , in the  HCE Library .  He will talk about the writing and illustrating process as well as his marvelous new book They All Saw A Cat .

"Wenzel uses colored pencils and pastels, charcoal and acrylic paint to create a layered, funny and fascinating visual lesson in seeing and interpreting. It's a delightful experience in multiple perspectives and changing points of view. As the cat ambles, a dog sees a slinking, sly creature; a child sees a rounded, soft-furred pet; a goldfish sees a blurry pair of glowing eyes; a mouse sees danger incarnate. But what might the cat see in a reflecting pool of water? What could a cat look like, to a cat?" The Washington Post

The deadline to order from Blue Willow is Thursday, October 27th. Thank you, Blue Willow Bookshop for sponsoring this awesome author visit!

PTA President's Perspective

SPIRIT SHIRTS have been delivered! Many thanks to April Peavy for organizing our new spirit shirts.  We love to show our Cougar Pride every day - but especially on Fridays and on field trips by showing our school spirit and wearing our green shirts!  Be #LoudAndProud!
PTA funding makes possible the wonderful Hands-on Science program for our 4 th and 5 th grade students.  Last week, the 5 th graders had a Hands-on Science project on Electricity & Magnetism.  They had fun creating electrical paths and picking up objects with magnets.  Thanks to Nan Chandler, Claire Johnson and Brianna Cisarik for coordinating the experiment!
The Financial Reconciliation Report, thoughtfully and painstakingly prepared this summer by Katie Wall, April Eschweiler and Farrell Saunders as an audit of the PTA finances, is now available for review in the front office (check with Liz Denton).  These ladies deserve one more shout-out for embracing this extremely important and time-consuming job to make sure the HCE PTA is on the straight and narrow.
Chick fil-a Spirit Night is next Wednesday from 5pm-8pm, so be sure and take advantage of this opportunity to show your support!  Just mention HCE when placing your order, and Chick fil-a will donate a portion of your purchase amount back to our school.  Thanks to Nicole Blaine for coordinating this event!
Next week is a busy week!  Red Ribbon Week starts, Science Fair kicks off, Classroom Spelling Bees and Field Day are Friday, Reflections projects are due Friday and our 2 nd Annual Halloween party is Friday evening!  Wow!  What great opportunities and fun events at our school.  Have a great one!

TEACHER WORKROOM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

The PTA is looking for interested volunteers to help out in the Teacher Workroom.   Ideally, each volunteer will work once a month in the workroom making copies, cutting, pasting and laminating for our HCE teachers.   Most likely the commitment is not longer than a couple of hours a month.

The time spent in the workroom helps our faculty and staff so much and allows them to spend more time focused on the classroom.  Please contact Kelly Siblik at  kelly.siblik@gmail.com  to volunteer today.  Thanks in advance!
