Please encourage your HCE Cougar to participate in the following dress up themes and remind them YOLO!!!!!!

THANK YOU, TEACHERS!
I want to give a huge THANK YOU to our fabulous HCE teachers for preparing for and conducting all their Fall parent conferences.
It takes teachers such a long time to prepare for wonderfully informative parent conferences and then it takes them days to conduct them - on top of preparing for a day of teaching and taking care of their families. We are grateful for our 2 noon dismissal days but they just put a small ding in finishing all the conferences.
Just think, 20-25 minutes per conference and it takes about an hour to gather all the info and prepare for each conference. Some of our teachers, who are departmentalized, meet with 40+ parents. That's 16 hours of conferences and 40 hours of preparation. That almost sounds impossible - but they do it and do it well. THANKS TO THE HCE TEACHERS!

Any chance I get, I promote family mealtimes together. Research shows that a routine of three or more meals a week, together as a family, yield the most positive benefits for children. I came across research that tries to pinpoint exactly the benefits of just family mealtime, taking out other factors such as socioeconomic level or one or two-parent households. Overall, the benefits are there - children are more likely to eat healthier foods and less likely to be overweight.
Family meal times are also linked to higher academic achievement and higher psychological well-being.
The routine of family meals generates feelings of closeness and comfort and dinnertime affords parents a unique opportunity to connect with children as long as the television is off and the cell phones are put away. I suggest making the table a "no-technology zone" for every meal. And no guilt if the meal is take-out on the table - you are still eating together, even if someone else cooked the food! Connecting with your children is key to reaping the benefits. Read more

Brendan Wenzel - Visiting Author/Illustrator
Blue Willow Bookshop
is sponsoring an author visit by Brendan Wenzel for
2nd grade students on
Thursday, November 3rd
, in the
. He will talk about the writing and illustrating process as well as his marvelous new book
They All Saw A Cat
"Wenzel uses colored pencils and pastels, charcoal and acrylic paint to create a layered, funny and fascinating visual lesson in seeing and interpreting. It's a delightful experience in multiple perspectives and changing points of view. As the cat ambles, a dog sees a slinking, sly creature; a child sees a rounded, soft-furred pet; a goldfish sees a blurry pair of glowing eyes; a mouse sees danger incarnate. But what might the cat see in a reflecting pool of water? What could a cat look like, to a cat?"

The Financial Reconciliation Report, thoughtfully and painstakingly prepared this summer by
Katie Wall, April Eschweiler

TEACHER WORKROOM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
The PTA is looking for interested volunteers to
help out in the Teacher Workroom.
Ideally, each volunteer will work once a month in the workroom making copies, cutting, pasting and laminating for our HCE teachers.
Most likely the commitment is not longer than a couple of hours a month.
The time spent in the workroom helps our faculty and staff so much and allows them to spend more time focused on the classroom. Please contact Kelly Siblik at
to volunteer today. Thanks in advance!
