Dear Neighbour:

As we head into fall, I want to remind you that children are back in school and our roads will likely be busier with traffic. Please drive with caution and if you are a pedestrian, watch for traffic.

The next few months will be very busy in Ward 9.  There are several community meetings scheduled already with more to come.  I hope you will attend those of interest to you and share your comments with me.

The key meeting I am holding is my Budget Town Hall on October 23, 2017.  This will be your opportunity to get some information on both the City and Region of Peel budget process and find out where your dollars are spent and what drives the budget.  I am pleased that Mayor Crombie will be joining me and I am planning to live stream the meeting on Facebook so that everyone can be involved.

The city is also receiving more development applications so watch for notices of upcoming meetings when I have received all of the plans.

All of this information is on the Ward 9 website, which I have recently had redesigned so please check there often at ward9.ca.

In the event that you are unable to view this e-newsletter please note that there is always a link on the front page of my website.

I am holding this meeting to provide an opportunity for Ward 9 residents to learn more about both the City of Mississauga and Region of Peel budgets.    I am pleased that Mayor Crombie will also be attending and we are both looking forward to meeting and hearing from you.

Staff will be making short presentations on the budgets and there will be ample time for discussion, questions and comments.  I am working on having the entire meeting live streamed on my Ward 9 Facebook Page so that you can send us your questions in real time and have them answered at the meeting.
Reimagining Meadowvale Town Centre - Walkability Audit

An exciting project that we are undertaking this year is Reimagining the Mall.  City staff are looking at specific malls to determine how they could and should be redesigned for the future.  Two of Ward 9's malls are included - Meadowvale Town Centre and Erin Mills Town Centre.

The first project involves Meadowvale Town Centre which was the focus of a review by planning students at the University of Waterloo earlier this year.   The first phase of the project is starting on October 2 when Peel Health staff will conduct a Walkability Audit of the MTC.

Everyone is invited to join us on Monday October 2, 2017 at the Meadowvale Community Centre, 6655 Glen Erin Drive in the Upper Lobby starting at 9:30 am for registration which will be followed by a brief presentation.  The group will then walk into the neighbourhood in and around the mall to note how walkable and accessible it is.

There will then be small group discussions back at the community centre with the session ending by 12:30 pm.   Spots are limited therefore please click here to register.

Please also check my website for further details closer to the date.

Road Safety Committee Vacancies

In March of this year Mississauga City Council approved my motion to reinstate the Road Safety Advisory Committee.

Road safety is a priority. We need to ensure our citizens travel safely whether as a driver, cyclist or pedestrian.  No fatality is acceptable but engineering alone cannot solve the problems on our roads. By reinstating the Road Safety Committee to support the work of our Traffic staff, we can implement more educational programs and involve our citizens in making our roads safer for all."

Advisory Committees are comprised of volunteer residents, city staff as well as 2 - 3 Councillors.  The Road Safety Committee currently has 8 vacancies.  If you are interested in getting involved in making our city a safer one to walk, cycle or drive in please click  here to apply.   The deadline to apply is September 15th.
2018 Culture and Community Grants Program

The deadline to apply for all grants is Friday, October 13, 2017 by 4:30 p.m.   Click  here  to for more information and to apply.
John Ambrose Named a Fellow of The Hymn Society

I am so pleased and proud that my dear friend, John Ambrose, former Pastor of Eden United Church, was honoured by The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada at its Annual Conference in Waterloo, Ontario last month, by being named a Fellow of The Hymn Society.

This award, which is the highest honour given by the organization, was conferred because of John's work as an editor, compiler, and encourager of congregational song, and for his significant contributions to the work of The Hymn Society.

Distracted Driving Campaign

Peel Regional Police Distracted Driving Campaign continues through to mid-November 2017 when the Festive RIDE begins.

According to the Ministry of Transportation-Ontario (M.TO.), the number of deaths caused by distracted driving has doubled since 2000. Studies also show that a driver using a cellphone is four times more likely to crash than a driver focused on the road and their surroundings.

The goal of this Region wide campaign is to improve road safety by reducing distracted driving. History has shown that enforcement is a key method to deter and educate drivers on this dangerous practice.  For further information on Distracted Driving, please click  here.
Stantec Consulting Services

You may be seeing Stantec Consulting Services trucks on our streets.  They began collecting road pavement condition data and imagery on every City-owned street on August 22nd. No street closures, detours or traffic disruptions are expected as a result of the collection.

The process is expected to last 8 to 10 weeks; throughout the remainder of this summer and majority of the fall season. Data collection will begin in the south-east quadrant and rotate counter clockwise through the City. Once completed, the data will be loaded into the City's road pavement management system to inform the development of the long range pavement rehabilitation forecast and budget.
Eden Food For Change

PAT IN THE COMMUNITY
Italfest 2017

I was pleased to join the Mayor and some of my Council colleagues at Italfest on August 19 to kick off the Festival.

This is the 5th year of Italfest which celebrates all things Italian - there was a bocce ball tournament, medieval flag throwers from Faenza, delicious food and great entertainment. Italfest has been named one of the top 100 Festivals and Events in Ontario.
Riders Against Hunger

I had the pleasure of once again bringing greetings at the Garry W. Morden Fire Training Centre on August 19 for the kickoff for Riders Against Hunger. This amazing event raises funds  for Eden Food for Change.

Motorcycle riders raised money for this great cause and the sight of them leaving on their ride is very impressive. It was exciting to see over 300 hundred riders start on their great journey which raised about $60,000 for our local food bank. Congratulations to organizer Bill Crawford and all the volunteers and riders for a successful event.
Unveiling of Spartan Hydrant

It was an exciting morning as the Mayor and I joined staff from the Region and Mississauga Fire at the Garry W. Morden Centre on August 17 to unveil the first newly designed fire hydrant since the 1850's. This is a new innovative design that will replace the existing hydrants. The Spartan fire hydrant is being tested for the first time in Canada at the Garry W. Morden Centre.   Click  here  to view a video about the Spartan Hydrant.
Cycling Master Plan

We had a very successful evening at Meadowvale Community Centre on August 14 for the city's Cycling information booth.

I spoke to many residents as they did a quick survey on cycling.  We are using this information as we move forward with a new Cycling Master Plan. Click here for information and have your say in helping to create a bicycle-friendly city.  I also used this opportunity to trial live streaming on Facebook in preparation for my Budget Town Hall in October.  It went relatively well and I appreciated the feedback I received from Facebook friends who watched and gave me some great advice.
Visiting Settler's Green Park

One of my more enjoyable site visits was to the new playground at Settler's Green Park on August 4th.  I had the opportunity to speak to parents and received excellent feedback on the new facility.  This enabled me to discuss some potential improvements with parks staff. One request was for some shade and I am working with staff to see if we can accommodate this.
