APRIL 2011

Greetings!  The countdown to Lupus Awareness Month is on!  We will continue to build on our theme, Band Together for Lupus. Are you in the band? We hope you'll join us and Band Together for Lupus™ to raise awareness and educate others about lupus this May during Lupus Awareness Month. It's estimated that 80 percent of the public know little or nothing about lupus. Together, we can change that, but we can't do it without you. Think of the impact we could make if everyone with a connection to lupus informed 10 people about the disease!
Some ideas to consider:
  • Wear your LFA purple wristband and encourage others to show their support;
  • Sign up for the Walk for Lupus Now events coming up in Ocean City, NJ or Wilmington, DE;
  • Place lupus awareness posters or literature in your community;
  • Promote lupus awareness on your social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedln, etc.;
  • Organize a Denim Day or other activity to promote  lupus awareness at your workplace, school or community group;
  • Participate in one of our upcoming educational programs, community events or join us for our Annual World Lupus Day Rally on May 24th in Love Park at 15th and JFK Boulevard in Philadelphia.  Don't forget to wear your purple!

Thank you for all that you do to support the LFA and raise awareness about lupus! You help us to advance our mission of providing support, services, and hope to all people affected by lupus!

Warmest regards and wishing you good health,
Annette Myarick

Bringing Down the Barriers

LFA's National Research Program

It is clear that we know more about lupus than we did 10 years ago. Advances in lupus research have provided us with a better understanding of the possible underlying causes of the disease and its progression, and have provided unprecedented opportunities to expand greatly our knowledge base on lupus.

Doors are opening to new approaches for improved treatment and care. We are in a position to answer many of the questions about lupus that scientists have been asking for decades. With new scientific findings, additional pathways have been identified for further study. However, without an expansion of public and private support for medical research on lupus, many of these opportunities will be lost and further progress delayed.
